Is your scenario of the S. belt wrecking the T. Belt from experience or just a very astute theory.

Theory based on cracking covers when working on the timing belt, I know how brittle they can get. Besides, plastic covers protect against the elements not brute force.

Your worrying for no reason in my book. I would want to see the engine going in before delivery. I am sure it's on a pallet, but you still can open the oil cap and see how clean it looks inside. Assuming everything looks good I'd go for it. The 2.9 is a great engine and I have had four cars with it.

I would have the mechanic install a new rear main seal minimum before installing. I would insist on a genuine Volvo seal just because it's right there easy while the engine is out. June

Engine out of the car is an excellent opportunity to thoroughly clean the lower end. You might want to have him recondition the top end also.

My 2.9L has 285,000 miles on it. I had to do the head gasket when I first got it (the '97 S90 is one of my $500 mechanics specials) it is running great.

I went through this on my '96 last year. Had to decide whether to replace the engine or junk it. I did decide to repair it and I'm glad I made the decision to replace the engine. I've had the car for almost 6 years so I know car and what's been done to it. I just hit 200K (replacement engine 190K) and hope to get many more miles from it. This engine runs better than the other 3 960's I've had in the past. I do my own work so I got through it much cheaper than it'll cost you but I'm still glad I did it.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the assistance. I went ahead and had the engine replaced. The replacement engine has a around 90k and so far so good... except for the AC which I think was never recharged.

Thanks again!
