All,
When I flushed my LR2 I used the modified Gibbons method (I am pretty sure that this would work on my 2010 S80, but I just bought that car so I only did a drain and fill, to understand why read Jimmy57's post above)
now back to the Modified Gibbons Method......
Red arrow - don't remove this pipe it will make a mess
Blue arrow - the actual T55 fill port
Green arrow - remove this pipe (held in place by one Torx bolt) and attach an extension hose, put the hose in a bucket and have a helper start the engine, the fluid comes out very fast, in about 10 - 15 seconds you will get air bubbles, turn off the car and add fluid to the fill port (blue arrow), flush as much fluid as you want using this method.
Don't forget when your done to set the level the T30 and snorkel must be installed then the engine turned on, with the vehicle level only then can you remove the T30 to check for dripping. (Per the manual its suppose to be 50C or something, I just make sure that its warm)
Some part numbers in case your interested

18 O-ring automatic transmission 1233068

Take care

Glad to hear that you got it done
I have changed my ATF using both methods
I didn’t really notice any difference, shifting was good before and good after
The process from the video is nearly exactly what I did on the 2010 S80 except I only did 4 quarts not 12.
I’ll do 4 more in 6 months or a year
Take care

I do a LOT of stop start driving jimmy. My fluid went from all new to very dark brown in my T5 in as little as 12,000 km. I recently got a P0785 that was the first (transmission) code in my 2001 T5.
My case may be unique in that when the transmission failed last year I purposely knocked out the internal filter by drilling the case and perforating the internal filter. I fitted an inline Magnefine on the cooler hose.
I did a drain and fill with 3.8L Nulon my favourite synthetic fluid and the code hasn't returned. I'm going to swap out the Magnefine also because the fluid that drained the other day was full of swirls of clutch material. Should I drain and fill again or wait the 5,000 miles you recommend?

jimmy57, thanks for your great info. I have a 2012 XC70 with 91k, trans fluid changed at 37k b/c of tech recommendation due to dark amber fluid color. Some Volvo people recommend trans fluid changes @ 60-70k. My trans is doing ok, vehicle always carefully maintained. Should I be thinking about another change?
This is my 3rd Volvo wagon, 2nd XC70. Great vehicles.

Thanks Paul I just joined the Forum and am slowly learning. Jimmy’s posts are really generous.
Since Volvo doesn’t tell us much about trans fluid changes, I am wondering if we should all be doing them at about 70k intervals?

If you drain and fill you will only remove about 3.5 quarts.
I try to do that once a year but once every 2 years should also give you a long life for your transmission.
I am going to assume that you have 3.2 or a 3.0T
Take a look at this link for what should be maintained

The 3.2 is shared by Land Rover and Volvo and I own one of each.
Take care

When I get a get a “ new to me” Volvo I do a fairly quick series of 3x 3.5 liter changes by the Gibbons method. After that, I do a 3.5 Liter Gibbons change every 15,000 or so.
