So replacing the t-stat is replacing the housing too? How about that?!!

In '03 Volvo combined the t-stat and coolant sensor in one housing.
Many encouraged changing both when doing either. Now you have to.
A few have posted pictures of installing a new stat in the old housing to save a few bucks.
Besides the additional R&R step involved you'd have to make certain you had the correct stat before you began or risk prolonged down time as you hunt about for a stat which fits.

Of all the money saving (savings for the manufacturer-expense for the consumer) things on cars now-a-days, this one is among the least impactful.

However, the old, stand alone thermostats and sensors were very easy to replace.

For combo (thermostat, ECT, housing x2), installation is cumbersome with removal of serp belt, PS Pump etc.

I posted a DIY, where you take only the tstat and ECT and "Transplant it over". This saves a lot of time (not saving money).

I'll go with what is there and do it when I take care of the PCV. Although I'll most likely be doing the timing belt and water pump at the same time. Not sure yet how I feel about all that. State tax returns are coming so it's either fix the car I have or get another. Get another would not be frugal at all after putting a new transmission in a year ago (ouch) and new Michelins all the way around.

I'm seeing my repair costs too high only if I don't do it myself. My car is otherwise solid. It is my work vehicle and pretty dang reliable so far. And the more I think about it, I just don't want another payment.

I have a timing belt, some suspension parts, issues with exhaust (possibly catalytic converter, too), and engine mounts to do. But even with a low MPG issue, I enjoy the car enough that I expect to keep it instead of finding a new one.
