These DEMs are moisture prone due to their location and not well sealed. Good call to unplug it.
Let us know how it goes.

This is where VIDA really pays.
I use 25 bucks as my hourly rate to pay myself, so if I save 4 hours of job with VIDA, it has paid for itself
Symptom based troubleshooting on a CANBUS car can easily exceed four hours.
Now I support 3 of my own and another 7 Volvos locally, its a no brainer

My symptoms are almost identical, my car only does this about every 100th warm/cold start. It's my ABS brake module. I took it out and sprayed it with air and it stopped for a while, now it does it a lot less. I do have another that I'm going to swap in if I can stop procrastinating.
I just assumed that's something on the canbus was taking down the whole system. I know this car has a problem with CEM overheating but I couldn't get it to act up using the hair dryer method.
so two other culprits I read on these forms are the differential module and the ABS module both prone to failure from water intrusion. even though my car said brake failure and I had ABS warning lights and such the abs system still functioned when I tried to stop in the snow. on a whim I climbed under there and unplug the rear differential module because this car has a stripped angle gear and the all-wheel drive doesn't work anyway. my problem seemed to have went away.
