If You are getting one atmosphere from a stock R tune you shortened up the wastgate
so that it inoperative.

My understanding of stock P80 R ECUs is that there was no increase in boost pressure. The only difference is the duration of allowed max boost... something like 30 seconds vs. 10 seconds.

I put a R ECU ("628" label) in my '97 T5 and didn't feel any difference.

Now if you have a 1994-1997 turbo (LPT or HPT) P80, put in a manual boost controller. That's some boost pressure difference.

Shortening the wastegate rod doesn't really change boost pressure, it moves the boost curve down the RPM range. That's why it bends rods. It might create boost spikes because the ECU doesn't expect it, but it will learn and "overcompensate", and you'll only see stock pressure, with earlier onset. And bent rods.

The difference is between the T5 (222/225 HP) which were 9.7 PSI, and the T5R/R (240/250 HP) which were 12 PSI.

Cool, thanks for the correction. I wish I would have measured the stock pressure to check this on my sample. I put in the R ecu, didn't feel any difference, and left it in, never going back and forth.

The IPD tune costs 450 and a used 628r ECU costs 125 on Ebay. There is a reason people shell out the extra money for a ARD Green or IPD tune,(or used to) its much faster. even though its only 12 psi max. I want more but not until I get an exhaust and reverse intercooler pipes that I'm going to make, though it doesn't make money sense to make your own.

The thing is that you don't need to spend 125 bucks on a 628 ECU. Get a cheap turbo M4.4 or M4.3 ECU, flash the BIN you want, and there you go. If you want an iPD or ARD tune, you'll have to shell out for it, of course...

An iPD tune for my '96 will probably net me about 20-25 HP and half a PSI, so that's not worth it at all, for me at least. I'd have to ramp up in the stages... I do have a do88 RIP kit on mine, which I think makes the engine breathe better, though no special on the exhaust side.

I would love to be able to flash an ECU. but I assume thousands of hours would be needed to get proficient. Im not good with non mechanical tuning. would love d088 rip and intercooler but poorboy it is all I can do.

Thousand of seconds needed for those who program stuff. Not difficult

I’m hoping we can inspire someone here to pick this up and make a few bucks on equipment and skills they already have. I haven’t programmed since the 80s although I did have do some Python last year in an emergency. Don’t miss that

If the bin files have already been mapped out and require no checksums, would be relatively easy to make modifications provided the microcontroller is known...
