I think the first question is: Did the 850s have real leather or simulated leather. I'm leaning toward simulated leather because real leather stinks unless you maintain the perfumes. Then one can determine if a plasticizer or rehydration is needed to soften.

Look at the back side of the "leather". For Faux Leather use a vinyl conditioner.

I went with a guy to the Parts Galore yard and found an entire interior which I bought for less than $100. I need to work on the leather a bit and it has one tear on a seam., that tear is fixable.

The leather is a dark gray, anyone have any ideas about how to soften the leather and make the cracks less obvious?
I think the stuff you want is Connolly Leather Care Cream - Ill find the SKU and post. Small green jar, about 250ml or so.

I was going to post that when I got home. Though it's been months since applying it my original leather has become even more pliable. As far as the cracks go you might consider dye. June

Thanks for the info. If you look at the back, you mean you would see plastic versus leather cowhide, right?

Any idea what the dark gray color is called? And whether or not it is leather?

First the came for the cows, until they were all gone.

Then they came for the Naugs...

There are a couple of options on interior including split fabric/vinyl, all vinyl, all leather.

My T5 is definitely all leather. See pictures in my re-skin thread.

Mothers VLR does a great job cleaning the interior of my T5 and restored some pliability to and softened my seats. It works on Vinyl, leather, and rubber, so it's pretty great for cleaning your seats, dash pad, and door inserts. I believe Volvo used vinyl treated leather, but don't quote me on that.

Yep, vinyl vs some kind of animal skin. The really soft and flexible leather is usually pig or goat not cow.
The vinyl industry has gotten real good at faking the looks and feel of leather.
