Does this same technique work with a 2004 XC70? I’m considering just going Fwd on mine. Pretty sure i have a bad driveshaft on mine with 190k, and not sure I want to invest the $$ when the axels, AOC, angle gear, and diff could be coming up behind it.
If you have pics of your setup available, I’d love to see them!

Yes, people have done this with the P2 cars (i.e. like yours) as well. Remove the AG and rear drive shaft, use hose clamps to keep the collar from scooting out. If you search the P2 forum you can find a few examples but that is the bottom line.seggs wrote: ↑25 Oct 2020, 19:08 Does this same technique work with a 2004 XC70? This thread viewtopic.php?t=79549 has a pic of Ed's (ecbsykes) original setup, if you dig you can find a few other examples.

Thanks much.
Any downside to just leaving the angle gear in place, with no driveshaft, other than a bit more drag on the engine? Still not comfortable with giving up awd forever. I feel somewhat optimistic on the life of the AG, AOC, & diff given that I’ve diligently changed fluids, but rear axels Look like a Pain. Anyone have insight into the life expectancy of these other components with reasonable care? Just don’t want to put $500 into a driveshaft and then have a similar repair Costs 6 mo later on the others.

If the collar isn't stripped out yet, no danger to leave the AG in. I would leave it. In which case you
On my 06, the collar stripped out rendering it FWD only, I left it all together and ran it as is, then two years later the AG started making loud growling noises so I had to take it out. Stripped out collar sleeve splines is the most common failure on the P2 cars.

If the internals have shredded and are grinding, some people remove the angle gear, gut it, then reinstall it whole but empty, or just the half side that holds the collar.

Thanks for the great ideas. Hopefully I can hold onto my awd, but if not, I know what to do.

If you are really motivated to keep the AWD it can definitely be done. Both the angle gear and rear diff can be rebuilt. The viscous coupling can also be purchased, although for $1300 from Volvo. If you ever do a rebuild of the angle gear you should weld the sleeve to the ring gear splines. There is a forum on sweedespeed on how this is done.

Thanks for the info. Right now I’m thinking my AG, AOC, & diff are ok. I suspect the driveshaft, or maybe one of the rear axles. Plan to drop the DS this weekend and see if the vibration goes away. Haven’t completely ruled it front axels, but those have been replaced.

After doing a bit more investigation, I determined the problem it was a bad bearing on the right front cv axle. For those interested in longevity of axles, I had replaced this one with an FEQ 70k ago. Not bad I guess for an axle that costs about 25% that of OEM. By the way, it was just the bearing, the CV joints seem fine.
