Bah! "I have an immaculate 2004 XC70 with a dead CEM" - so all you need is CEM reflash! In fact, 2004 was the last year when the flash and EEPROM chips were separate. Flash is "program", EEPROM is "identity". 2005+ has both functions buried in one encrypted chip.

I didn't try it myself, but it could be all you need is a donor CEM (same part number) and EEPROM chip transfer, which is relatively a basic work for any electronic hobbyist.

P2 (2001-2007) XC70 is the best car Volvo did in past 20 years.

Looking at 7 years ago when I paid bucks for the second hand XC70, I would get myself a 2004 XC70, not 2005. 2004 has most/all of the early years bugs fixed and the electronics is simple enough to allow me to keep the car up and running almost forever.

Forgive me for the dirty talk but....

Have you considered contacting a Volvo dealer or independent shop who happens to have a legit version of Vida? Can't they program your salvaged CEM into the other car?

They do not load sw into a used CEM.

Hmmmmmmmm.....
This makes me ask 'Why Not'?
If I drop the 2.5 motor and transmission into the V70 body, how would the electronics know that there is 200cc of additional capacity?
- All the engine and transmission sensors are the same
-The ECM controls the fuel injection which is governed by the front oxygen sensor - not related to the engine directly
- There would be no turbo.. use V70 Exhaust Manifold
- the ignition advance curves may be slightly different.... I promise not to go racing in the V70
- The unused exhaust CVVT would run in its static position...I promise not to go on any fuel economy runs with the V70
- Exhaust camshaft position sensor would be not connected.

Thoughts.......????

How would Denso natural aspiration ECU know that the new engine has a different compression ratio? I don't know, you try and tell us :-D

Ill give it a shot

All the engine and transmission sensors are the same
Turbo and NA pressure sensors are different >>>> ECM code

-The ECM controls the fuel injection which is governed by the front oxygen sensor - not related to the engine directly
FI controlled by ECM via inputs from load, OXS, MAF, temp, pressure , ECT - at least two of these are different >>> ECM code

- There would be no turbo.. use V70 Exhaust Manifold
ECM code for missing MAP and "pressure reading unlikely" or some code like that

- the ignition advance curves may be slightly different.... I promise not to go racing in the V70
Drastically since they are boost dependent

- The unused exhaust CVVT would run in its static position...I promise not to go on any fuel economy runs with the V70
- Exhaust camshaft position sensor would be not connected.

?>> Code for missing solenoid signal and low 12VDC

On the plus side, if you put in red and green LEDS on the CEL, it would make a nice Christmas tree.

I agree if I was putting the V70 into the XC70, there would be a number of missing sensors, inputs and controls.

My proposal is to put the XC70 motor into the V70 and run it without turbo, no exhaust CVVT,, the V70 ECM wouldnt be looking for solenoid state.its not wired. Ignition timing would be for no boost V70 (no turbo). likewise V70 isnt looking for MAP input
