Is French salt worse than North American salt?? Actually, they spray that chemical de-icer here, and I’m told it especially doesn’t like aluminum. I’m pleasantly surprised at the condition underneath on mine.

Thanks for all of the input. Despite BlackBart's strong recommendation, I will go with the majority and probe them, erring to keep them. I just spent $1000 to overhaul the brakes (these pictures are the "before") and I will replace my rear shocks due to ruined bushings (and the absurd amount of stuff I've hauled in the past 17 years). Gotta prioritize what I fix.

Simple DIY Rust converter.
1 liter distilled water
20 gm Tannic acid
15 gm Phosphoric acid
Let it work all the way through then seal with a protective coating.

You can get the acids on eBay ....

Good god ... I thought that we used a lot of salt up here in Canadia ... I wouldn't touch anything until you have a problem. Speaking from experience you are likely going to have to replace everything once you start digging into it. Bolts will be seized and you are almost definitely going to break multiple components. Start saving now and when the time comes do a complete refresh, that is assuming that rest of the car is decent.

My 2 cents: The spring seat looks like it is structurally damaged by the rust. Very nasty result if fails while moving (and that is when loads are greatest). See recent post on replacement of broken lower spring seat and the tire damage.
