Re: Car starts but has trouble accelerating

Post by 5rivers »

OMG!!! You all really got walloped! We received a dusting up here in the cold North Country. Not even enough to break out the shovels. Hope you survived the back breaking work! Though, having a snow blower helps tremendously!!

I was able to check the auto transmission dip stick. On the cold side, there are four lines from the low level to full. The fluid in the car is at the third line - so almost full. I don't think that level would cause the kind of acceleration problems my car has been having. As mentioned before, if I let the car warm up, idle for a good five minutes, then acceleration is not a problem. If I drive the car without warming it up (like when I'm in a rush to get somewhere!) then the car takes a good mile or so to get up to speed without the rpm needle going above 3K. So, maybe I will try changing the fluid and using synthetic transmission fluid. Is there a particular brand the V70's like? The manual recommends ATF Dexron IIE/III. Thoughts??
Appreciate your replies and gained knowledge of driving/repairing these wonderful beasts!!
Stay warm!!

Remember you have to start the car and get the fluid circulated to check the level, it is never done with the engine off.

It could show 3/4 full engine off, and empty with the engine idling

also, before measuring, row through all gears slowly. at least that's what the manual claims.

Kally - go to the Valvoline Dexron VI synthetic for your ATF if you change it, Great stuff.

Thank you, abscate and clemens, for your recommendations!
I will check the level again, after going through all the gears, with the car running and after it has been running for 20 to 30 minutes. Most of my car usage involves driving no more than ten miles round trip. Once a week, I might drive between 40 and 50 miles round trip, and once every few months, I venture south (about 200 miles each way) to balmy Syracuse!
Stay tuned for another (and more accurate) set of readings!

WELL...you would not believe what I discovered when I was able to drive the car long enough to check the transmission fluid dipstick....there was not a single drop of fluid on the stick!!!! "No surprise," I am sure you are saying!!
After adding a quart of fluid, the reading of the fluid comes up to the top line on the stick. While I was under the hood, I checked the oil level....and to my surprise (lots of them the past few days) it was down a quart, so I added oil.
And guess what? The car ran smoothly all the way home. So, I will have to keep tabs on both fluids by checking each on a regular basis, and when it gets to be warmer than it is now (about zero degrees F), like in the early spring, I will change to transmission fluid to a synthetic.
Thanks to all who made great recommendations on helping me to solve my car's acceleration issues. It takes off now like a bat out of hell!!!!! :)

BOOM, Mike drop......MVS for the win.....

Have a good look under for red ATF fluid leaks

Check the hoses that plug into the radiator for the transmission cooler, there are two o rings that can leak ATF there.

Keep an eye on your coolant and make sure you aren’t mixing coolant and ATF inyour radiator.

Check your levels every 1000 miles until you get a sense of the usage

Thanks for the suggestions on what to keep an eye out for...new issue...car has trouble starting, wants to start, runs really rough when it does...then stalls out. I can give it gas to keep it going but when I take my foot off the gas, the car stalls out. Checked a few things so far, biggest culprit is the MAF. The car runs better when it is not connected. Cleaned the sensor and re-installed, but car runs rough like before. I can hear the fuel pump working when I turn the key before starting the car. Is there anything else I should be checking other than maybe finding another MAF?
Appreciate your replies!

Forgot one other observation, just before the car stalls out, the light on the dash that is an arrow pointing up comes on. Not sure what this indicates.

It could be the MAF bit is more likely a broken hose and / or vacuum leak.

Unmetered Air leaking doesn’t get matched with fuel , when you disconnect the MAF the engine guesses fuel based on rom and does a better job at matching air/fuel.

Did you get that smoke tester built? Perfect for finding leaks
