Throwing new parts into unidentified harmonic vibration =)

I'm still keeping the "old" struts.

Know what you mean. Sometimes the mind is not in the mood to troubleshoot so it's just muscle memory to throw parts at it  .

Sometimes your beard is not grey and long enough =)

I still have that noise, and, looking at wife's XC60 with an intake VVT hub failed at 40k miles, I think "my" noises come from VVT hub as well.

As a bonus, I have all-new front end. Down to subframe bushings ;)

That's gotta be a real odd sounding mystery harmonic vibration to go from struts to VVT Hub?

It really feels like something is off in the strut, thanks to a soundproofed firewall. I've had a similar noise in V70, which turned out to be a damaged strut. So I was fooled.

No, you were not fooled. Sometimes everything needs a complete refresh. I've been chasing a slight pull off the line in the 03 S80 T6 since I purchased it around Dec 2018. Upper poly engine mount, custom securing of the factory strut bar so the rubber bushings do not provide any cushioning nor movement, lower transmission mount, 2 front complete strut assembly and then subframe inserts. The chassis is as firm as ever and response is very good but the pull is now attenuated off the line  . Will do the control arms next as the tie rods "seems" good (no play in the steering). Keep chasing it :D .
