Did you know that engine oil also is a way the engine cools itself?

Fix your car or it will bite you - which is exactly what happened.

What is the year model and odometer reading?

Do you have a video clip of the engine sound?

You have two issues. Having the dipstick out for the blowby means you have a PCV problem. When I purchased the $500 98 S70 T5 in 2012 there was oil gushing out of the dipstick tube. I read about the PCV here on MVS before joining and took a chance on the purchase hoping it was just the PCV. The seller buys Auction cars to flip without testing them. Said he took a lost.

The second issue is overheating due to a potential leak in the cooling system. The cooling system needs to be under press in order to raise the Temp without boiling off the water / coolant (Ideal Gas Law (pV = nRT). If the system is closed and working fine the fan would have just kicked on and off as needed. Well, make that a potential 3rd problem of the fan not coming on .

As for the knock?

Yes I was aware of the pcv, that was the only thing bad with the car. Smoke was coming out the dip stick, so I new it was clogged for sure. As for the fan, it was definitely working. The 12 year old used RAd I put in was definitely the cause for the failure, along with the clogged pcv. So when all the coolant leaked out from the cracked radiator, this in turn heated up the oil so much it boiled and squirted out the dipstick causing oil loss for to long. And it actually still drives, but u can hear the horrible knocking is way worse now, its directly under the valve cover, so something top end. 2006 Volvo s60 2.5t with 180k. Dealer maintained. Well everything except the pcv lol. Anyways I learned a very valuable lesson. don't buy used radiators, don't fall asleep with your car running in 90+ degrees for 20-30 min, and do the pvc right away. Next one I get, I'm making sure all this is Done already. I can take a video of the knocking tomorrow. I'm sure with A top end rebuild, Pcv, that it would be fine. but I don't wanna risk it here on a 1500 car. On to the next one!

While there just a shoot out speaking of parking lots, good to remember these cars crack radiators near the top brackets when the bottom of the bumper 'hangs' over one of these annoying curbs - especially the taller ones. I'm always scared when I park against one of these, why don't they make all these in rubber and with a lower profile ? That would be so simple to use recycled tires rubber and be ecological in the process.

Yea seriously. When first got it I pretty much ripped off the bumper lol. It was one of those curbs with the barbs sticking out ion each side a little and it tore it half way of. I Was able to get it back good. Then when I slid into a bank and cracked the radiator of the lightest hit to the bank. That's why I ended up having to get a new radiator, but it was an old used dirty one. Lasted like 6 months not even. It was during the holidays to, and I couldn't wait the ten days plus for a new one. I needed my car on the road immediately. But the first time the radiator broke, i got it towed home and when he let it if of theb flat bed, he rolled it back and soon as the front tires came off the flat bed, the bed raised up and smashed my whole bumper, I barley was able to get it back together. Its nuts the low profile, and that if u hit any thing from the front, your radiator is gonna crack. If that was an old truck or something, that little slide into the bank would of just tickled it. I would of been able to back up and keep driving like nothing. After that I always made sure I was far enough away from any curb lol. At least my 850 was able to clear most curves without touching. But your right they should of reinforced the bumper something or did something, so if u do go to far on a curb it doesn't rip the bumper off lol. Yes that would be an awesome idea. Make all the curbs out of rubber. So if u do hit it, it would just like compress down so it wouldn't rip it off. But yea I been beating myself up about this whole thing. Cause in didn't take that quick nap, o would of saw the coolant low message, turned it of immediately, and this time put a brand new radiator. How ironic how this happened. I thought it was transmission fluid leaking, I was really hoping it was because if the radio failed I know the trans fluid can leak out to. I checked the transmission dipstick, and it was full and I new I was in big trouble. I just did a full flush on the transmission fluid not long before all this happened. The transmission, and engine where running like a charm! I wish I was able to fix the top end. The knocking iincrea
