Timing Belt &water Pump Time...

Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.

This is the first good word I’ve seen about a Hepu on a Volvo. I put one on a VW and it went over 100,000 miles with no issues. I know you rack up the miles so I trust your opinion.

Ordered that kit from FCP
Ordered the Aisin water pump without the bolts from Amazon for $57. Also, the CTA-2883 cam locking tool from Amazon. I had a credit there and will need a pump for the other car soon, as well. That will put off the decision about whether or not to use the Gates pump I have. Actually, I don't put much mileage on these cars. If the Gates pump failed after 25k miles, it may fail on my heirs.

For the later 1999 S70 with mechanical tensioner, there is actually an Aisin kit on Amazon that has all the parts including pump for only $134. The text says it includes a "Mitsubishi-sourced" timing belt, but the one in the photo is a Gates.

I did mine without a cam lock. I didn't find I needed it FWIW. If you move them by accident you can just rotate them ever so slightly. Get some whiteout and mark the corners as they point to the plastic cover.

Good advice in that thread of rotating it around a few times once the new belt is on. I did that and still, going to turn the key, that's a heart stopper.

I used the AISIN waterpump as well IIRC.

To clarify

You don’t need the cam lock tool for anY -1998 car with no VVT

YoUdont need the cam lock tool for a 1999 NA which also don’t hAve VVT

From 1999 turbos on, you don’t need the cam lock tool to do a timing belt if the VVT HUBS stay in place

From 1999 on, if you are doing cam seal on VVT CAMS, or other work requiring Removing the VVT, you do need the cam lock tool.
