I wanted to make that point because I think the case for the catch can is less obvious if you don't think the PCV system is unreliable. You could save $40 on parts, but you'd have to find a place to mount the catch can, empty it regularly, and subject yourself to the quality of your own engineering. Access to the system is poor and it spends its life in a cave of vibrations and heat cycles, so you will be punished for system failures. Your call, but personally I'd buy the system I know will be good for 15 years.

So I'm an Idiot. The car has a production date of 2/97 so I'm guessing that makes it a '98 model year.

I am familiar with PCV systems and their operation. The car has a well documented service history but just turned 300k. I'm gonna go ahead and do a full PCV Service just to make sure everything is flowing well.

From what I've read, and done, you can upgrade/modify your PCV system to make it work better. Larger diameter hoses etc than the stock system. It seems that as these engines get older they need the larger diameter hoses for the system to work right. If you were to do the catch can option then the easiest way I've seen is to use an older Volvo ( 122 ? ) oil filler cap that has a vent tube coming out of the top and connect hose/trap to that.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Your life just got a lot lot easier with a 98. Everything is far more mechanical, hell if you are intersted in tuning the me4.4 & 4.3 have very well documented amateur tuning tools. That is a very rare and desirable car you have there ;).

On my last PCV i blew out the oil trap with air and cleaned it and reinstalled. Just clean out the pipes. If you have trouble seeing at night, then id recommend a cheap projector retrofit or some led's.

Added:

For the off idle hesitation, does it feel like you are pushing the pedal but its just free spinning, like kickdown is not working.

If so then i would recommend the following:
-Oil Change Obviously
-Transmission drain and fill (might help with the shifting)
-maybe check your vacuum lines

The hesitation seems more air/fuel/timing related. The car goes forward, its just kinda stumbles until the RPMs pick up. I did change the plugs with some NGK 7092's yesterday and that seemed to help a small amount. I'm in the process of ordering everything for a stage-0 as well as a mechanical boost gauge.

As for seeing at night....that's a whole 'nother story. The headlights on this thing are TERRIBLE! I've been looking into a jewel swap but really don't wanna spend that amount of cash on headlights. May just do new replacement lenses and an LED conversion.
