Took pics of items but learned I can no attach them to this message, or at least I do not know how. Box has three relays, two identical on top, a bigger relay just under them- the Flusher relay-and below that, the fueses, which I checked and all are in good shape.
Which of the three is the starter relay. The cover to this box has labels, one says Engine SRS, the rest are labeled to other components unrelated to the engine
Thanks, again

Hello,
I am assuming you mean, scroll after writing the message, then scroll again to Full Editor & Preview, and last, to Add Files. I get as far as Preview but see no Attachments or Add files.
Possibly my screen is a bit different from yours.
Anyway, which of the two relays is the Starter relay?
Thanks for your patience.

Okay, Rick.
Thanks for your patience.
I found the starter relay, #4, which is marked with a bright stripe down the middle, but looks just like the other three; 5, 6,and 7. They all have 4 poles/slots; two horizontal on top and two vertical on bottom. And, while I do not know which two to jump to activate the starter, I did switch #4 relay with one of the other three, hoping that if it's burned out, it would start the car but did nothing. So, I am still in search of the original problem, but have now learned more about this car, thanks to you.
Have a nice day

Did you try jumping the Green wire to the White wire on the Ignition switch?
Push jumper wires into the switch connector until you make contact then short the two wires together.
Check the White wire, make sure it has power.

Hello, Rick
White wire has current for sure. Disconnected the ignition switch and jumped the white and green wires and nothing happened.
In my experience, when the starter goes, clicks can be heard when trying to start the car but in this case, nothing. Is it still possible the starter went, without any previous symptoms?
Have a nice Monday

Wire to switch connected and key on when trying to jump.

If the Starter Relay clicks when turning the key to start. ( Put your finger on it and feel for the click ) The problem is not in the steering column.
From there on you got:
1. Switch side of Starter Relay.
2. Wires to Starter Solenoid.
3. Starter Solenoid.
4. Starter.
5. Starter grounds.

Okay, Rick. Will try while put finger on relay, no problem.
However, the wires are not exposed when the switch and wires are connected unless I exposed them.

Attempted to start car while placing finger on starter relay, as you suggested, but no vibration nor any reactions from it. Again, the car NEVER showed any symptoms that the starting system would fail, like I explained in my fist message, it behaved very normal except to this time it did not start on the first try as it always did but it turned normally. ONly this time, when I tired to a second time, NOTHIN happened, it did not turn, click or made any sounds at all, as if the battery had suddenly died, which did not, it had plenty of power. The ignition switch also shows no physical, unusual symptoms, other than it just work start. I am very confused as I have never seen this before.
Thanks, Rick

Hello, Rick
Want to thank you, very much, on all your input on this issue.
I have gotten rid of my Volvo s40, the new owner tells me the problem was a bad ignition switch. So, it turns out your were very accurate on your diagnosis. THANK YOU!!
