Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
Plus one on belt only, since I'm guessing it has the hydraulic tensioner. I'm gun shy on mechanical tensioners; I bought a car with under 40k on a belt replacement, the tensioner gave up shortly after I bought it, with the ensuing mayhem. The car is a lawn ornament under the Willow Oak now.

My new-to-me 2000 V70 has 210k miles on it. The timing belt was last changed at 107k mi 13 years ago. The car operates correctly though I'm being very gentle with it until I get the belt changed.
I just ordered all of the parts to rehab the engine. $87 for timing belt, tensioner, idler (INA brand pulleys). $78 for accessory belt and tensioner (INA brand pulley). $80 for the water pump, gasket, and bolts. To me, these are fairly priced investments in the long term health of the car.
If you're taking the time to replace the belt, you might as well include new INA brand pulleys for under $100.

I don't like surprises in general. I'm a newbie and i learned mechanic. Here. What is done is no more to do. To start on a healthy base, i would change all these parts, no tricky job in fact if you take your time to fix the timing etc...
But as it has been said before, each member his own story.
I really appreciate the very helpful replies, everyone! It sounds like I'll just be replacing the belt then (although I totally understand the angle that I might as just replace it all and have the peace of mind, for my mother's 850 you can bet that's what I'll be doing ). Now I just need to read up on how best to replace the belt without replacing the tensioner.
