I am not talking about the fluid, I am talking about the broken pipe inside the PS Reservoir.
Did you check that?

- The thread below shows you the "good" bottle and "bad" bottle...
https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s80 ... uid-16276/
- If you need to replace the reservoir, stick to genuine Volvo part.
- If you need to flush it:
1. Search for ATF vs Pentosin
2. No need to run engine.
I did it with engine off, return hose fed into a bottle and wiggle the steering wheel between 11 and 1 o'clock position, very very easy. Please see link below!

As a diagnostic test, try to get a used PS Pump (a known good used PS Pump) and swap to see what happens.
Sometimes you have to use the "process of elimination" to diagnose issues...
OTOH, if you have > 180K-200K miles, not a bad idea to get a new PS Pump and see what happens.
I am not a parts swapper, wasting $, but if you have > 180K-200K miles, then the PS Pump is at the end of its life.

Then I guess the next culprit is the steering rack. I'd live with the problem for now until it is worse, then replace the steering rack (not a fun job)...

Don't know if you resolved this...probably as I see no recent posts. I had this same problem this summer on my 2006 XC70! The steering was variable in stiffness. I really thought I had a steering rack problem. After online research, I tried lubing the u-joint under the steering boot inside the car and it got better then much worst after a day or so. Not sure why.
I replaced that u-joint even though on inspection it looked fine. This solved the problem. Steering is totally fine. You do have to be a contortionist to do this job. Note: I did have a part sourcing problem from an on-line supplier so be careful and look at pictures carefully.
As I recall my u-joint shaft had a recess at one end of the shaft and the sourced part did not, so it did not fit! I actually (cringing here) used a dremel tool and made a recess to get the part to fit. No problems.

No i have not resolved it yet, i have now got worse, i get stiffness steering, i can turn 1/4 of a turn, then it get stiff, then a little better, and then stiff again. so now i am sure it is a u-joint problem..
the u-joint you changed, is that the one on the steering rack under the boot, or the one inside the car? do you have a picture of the part you changed??
