Dealing with fading clearcoat on 850s

So...how do you deal with it? Fender was replaced and the only part of the red '96 that was clear coated, now peeling in multiple spots.

I think "ubiquitous" tells the story but if we're going to be pedantic (great!) then at least tally the numbers accurately (they weren't). For P80 cars if we also add in rguzz's new post then so far we have:

(peeling, not)

1 unclassified - Sonic's we don't know for sure (but likely peeling because it is ubiquitous on P80's by now!)

(0,1) - Rick's datum
(2,2) - my data
(2,3) - abscate's
(1,2) - Clemens'
(1,0) - rguzz's

overall (6,8) or 6 peeling, 8 not peeling.

Well, my S70 (nautic blue) had the same problems on the bonnet and on the front fender on the left. I cleaned the spots really well and treated it with some clear coat to stop further flaking.

Tally: (7,8) or 7 peeling, 8 not peeling. ~50/50. Not everywhere dos not meet the criteria for ubiquitous.

Point is: the only reasonable course of action is to ask. Assuming it peeling because you think it is an ubiquitous condition will result in a ~ 50% defect rate.

Who said don't ask? Of course ask. We still don't know for sure about Sonic's car, beyond that it has paint issues.

Ubiquitous is experiential not mathematical. It denotes "seen commonly" not "the only thing you will see." It refers to what we seem to encounter around us, not to some percentage. One half of a 50/50 distribution could easily qualify as ubiquitous and could easily not.

I see a lot of P80 cars, including many with peeling clearcoat. Make of that what you will.
