I might have put the wrong engine in the parts engine. Try your VIN

When engineers design a part they typically (in my near 40 years design experience) will create the name for the part. Often the lead engineer or the company will have some 'naming convention' the engineers were to follow exactly. Engineers tend to be stubborn independent thinkers and do not always follow other people's rules and conventions. This is sometimes why trying to find a part by your best guess of the name is difficult.

We need some kind of universal language to describe parts that is searchable even for those rogue Colonies that can’t spell

I agree with the idea, BUT Engineers tend to be stubborn independent thinkers and do not always follow other people's rules and conventions.

I've lost my fair share of bolts onto the garage floor or into the dark lower regions of the subframe, never to be seen again. But two handy ideas -

Use those $5 harbor freight magnetic dishes to put all the hardware from one task in. You can also put each group of hardware into a sandwich bag and label it with a sharpie if there are too many to remember. When you're going too fast or the job takes a long time, it's so easy to forget what went where.

Or, always put the hardware back in the holes as soon as the piece is off. Then it's not lost and it's clear which bolt went in which hole - you know those water pumps or whatever that have the same size bolts but three different lengths?

Everybody knows Engineers can't spell worth a darn. So they name it what they can spell and sometimes what they cannot spell. :wink:
