I worry that liquid fuels that will burn in our cars may be terribly expensive sometime in my remaining life. We may have to convert them to electric to drive them. That does not sound like much fun.

I agree. We’ve got expensive fuel in our future. Fuel is expensive nearly everywhere else in the world, but they get along ok.

In some parts of the world where there is hydro electric power a-plenty, electric cars almost make sense. But is a vehicle that has an 8-10 year life cycle better for the environment than a 20-25 year old gasoline burning car?
Any other form of electric power generation (until we can get reliable fusion power) is worse or at least as bad for the environment than fossil fuels like oil and gas. Let's draw a line under coal power!
Recently Hoovie of Hoovies Garage on You tube bought a 10 year old Tesla S. 2 weeks after buying it went into limp mode. He paid $20000 US for it. Battery had partly failed putting it into permanent limp mode. He was quoted $17-22k to replace the battery pack.
He had the pack re-built buy some guys in Florida who found and replaced the bad section of the pack for $5k. Problem is you still have a crap load more that can fail. I am happy to be corrected but I understood we have no way currently to re-cycle Lithium batteries.
Hydrogen is a better way to go.
Until we find a way to make batteries and electricity reliably and sufficient quantity to power all those electric cars we will be hooped on that front as a way forward!
As for 740/940's being valuable? I had a 940 Turbo wagon with a HPT motor 25 years ago. Still one of the best cars I have owned.
I like a stick shift in a RWD car as they are so much fun in snow! They are getting rare enough now that good ones will probably start to gain in value for those of us oldies who have fond memories of them, much like the 240's are seeing now. I had several 240's and can't say I have any really fond memories of any of them.
Neil.
