You can drill from the botton...one at the very bottom of the pump and one an inch of so up...the two holes is to keep vapor lock from happening so it will drain. I've heard good results with air pumps that aren't completely gone- possibly long enough to get you through emissions testing anyway.

There is a good write-up on the entire air pump/SAS mess in the repair database.

Hello-
I have a way to fix the air pump. You need to be handy, but it entails simply replacing the seezed bearing. If you are interested, I'll send a power point file with pictures (there are a few tricks to taking the pump apart). If you are interested, let me know.

Certainly! It would be worth having here. If you would post the pictures and write some instructions I'll pin it in the repair database.

Does the air pump contribute to better gas mileage?

I noticed the 'noise when cold' thread mentioned this.. I'm not well versed in the function of the air pump. Here in Iowa, you can drive anything because there is no emissions testing. If my 850 would run right, I'd just vent the PCV tube right to the ground ;-) Well maybe not, but I'd like to.

So if the air pump dies, do I have to do anything to block it off, or is it OK to just keep driving without it?

You can just keep driving it. It won't affect it at all. I drove one for 3 years with the air pump siezed up.

It will turn off the "fuel trim" but I couldn't tell the difference either way.

Hey Dave, I'd love it if you could provide me with your writeup. Am due for NYS inspection this month and the inspector sent me packing along with a NYS pamphlet "What Do You Mean My Car Isn't Ready for Inspection?" :)

At least the folks (woops, meant to write a rhyming word there instead) in Albany have a good sense of humor. Anyway I'm putting out engine codes for the air pump and don't want to spend more than absolutely necessary.

I have heard the whining noise on cold start so will try to drill the two holes -- is there a clear picture somewhere of just where to drill from under the car?

Also is it possible to unplug the SAS valve? I'm thinking of trying to clean it out with carb cleaner but so far what read everyone says to replace it.

Marty
