I've been debating on switching to Rotella T6. Currently running Castrol Edge 0w40 and it's alright, but the lifter noise when I first start is worse than with the old 10w30 and my oil cooler thermostat moans EVERY day when I first start the car. Before, it was just when it was really cold out. It's August in North Carolina, the cold weather ain't an issue...
I'm thinking the 5w40 would be a good happy medium, though I think I want to try Mobil 1 0w40 first. I've been really happy with how that oil has performed in my cousin's T5.

You're bolder than I am running 0 weight down south. lol I like using 10w40 in the summer months and I'm in PA which can be a bit cooler than NC, but I was experimenting with a 10K mile oil change interval so I left the Rotella T6 in there this summer.

I came across a few people recommending the Rotella oil for these engines and its cheaper than Mobil 1 so I decided to try it out myself. What made you start using the 0w40 oil?

My dad was using it in his E39, and the Castrol 0w40 is literally the ONLY oil I can find locally that is 100% approved for that BMW's LL-01 standards. I'm not too worried about the oil being exact specs as long as its API certification is up to standards and the weight is good for the car. So I figured I've heard only good things about the 0w40 for those engines, so that was the best choice (for the BMW that is).
Anyway, I looked into it for these cars, and there are a lot of people on here and elsewhere who have been using it and have been very happy with it, particularly the Mobil 1 version. My cousin has been using it in his '99 T5 and the car runs worlds better than on 10w30, which is weird because it seemed like the opposite with my car. His car had CONSTANT and very loud lifter noise with the 10w30. With the 0w40, they're silent.
My other cousin, who has more experience than either of us, told us both that the oil seemed too thin for a turbo motor, but after reading around I don't think so. I mean it's approved for the Bugatti Veyron, and that has four turbos, so I think it's good enough for my one turbo.

You're gonna need a '98 ECU for a '98 car. Motronic 7 won't work on a 4.4 car.
If you're referring to the TCU, then you don't need one at all. As for the transmission, any M56 will work I think.

I have Checked the oil and other vital fluids for the not short drive home tomorrow .
Tried and proven out the cassette player with some midnight oil and took the scenic route home from the park place in the 940 gle.
The car is 10 years old this month.

The wife to be surprised me at the airport with my 855. She somehow managed to get her fixed, inspected, and registered without any involvement from me. Feels good to drive her after a 2 year hiatus.
