I have the 4sp and would have planned on using Dexron III however the write up of Dexron III products in Wikipedia is not very flattering, suggesting some lack of quality control or regulation, seems to be going the way of Dex II. For some reason Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is hard to come by here in Colorado Springs. Pep Boys carry it I guess. Checking out a Napa store I saw that they have the Napa Brand Dexron VI ATF, a full synthetic. Says it can be used in all Dex III applications. I am considering using that this week in my flush. Anybody know why there isn't a transaxle filter in my '97 850 T5?

FYI
Heres a link to a write up on Dexron VI and its suitability for Dex III applications.

I got my Mobil 1 Synthethic ATF at Autozone...dont know if they have them in Colorado. Only problem...they only had 8 quarts, not really enough to do a full flush. Price was $7.99/qt

I just completed the transmission flush on my S60 based on the instructions. They were right on and it went great. Thanks for all of the great info...I couldn't have done it without this site. My only regret is that I didnt have a few more quarts of new fluid. I bought 12 and thought it would be enough, but I should have bought 14 to do a cleaner flush. Its good but could have been better.
Thanks

I ended up going to three different stores, Checkers, Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts to round up 14 qts of Mobil 1. Why nobody carries enough in one spot is a mystery. I had a little over 15,000 miles and just 28 months but that first dose coming out on the purge was pretty ugly. Overall its a dark red. Can't see going 30,000 miles in between. No fuss, no mess. Did order the flush kit through IPD though and that came with new o ring and a new clip for the hose. I wouldn't use less then 14 qts. This five gallon water bottle worked great.

Hi All

I must say thanks for all the valuble info frm this forum. i took my volvo in to a dealer here in SA and they said i need to replace my transmission and quoted me $6500 which really was crazy, so i did some research and changed the trans. oil. My is running great except for a few little glitches like i think i overfilled the thing and ummm well it doesnt go into reverse(which only started happening when i fetched the car from the dealership, did a transmission oil change and all is wel. Im now gonna put it on a diagnostics machine to upgrade and fix the software then im gonna take volvo on.

but thanks you guys for the info, saved me lots of money!

Any opinions/experiences to report on using DEXRON VI instead of III in the 98-00 4speed trannys? Seemingly its a good leap forward, especially in cold weather.

<edit>......Interesting stuff from wikipedia. GM have no influence over DEXRONIII since '06.
wikipedia wrote: DEXRON-III
DEXRON-III is not compatible with the most recently designed transmissions, and the use of these earlier type fluids could result in transmission damage.
All DEXRON-III licenses expired at the end of 2006, and will not be renewed. Beyond that date, General Motors will only support the use of DEXRON-VI fluids for use in Hydra-Matic transmissions.[1] Fluids claiming DEXRON-III type performance continue to be sold under abbreviated names such as Dex/Merc and D/M, however, since the DEXRON-III licensing system no longer exists, these fluids are not regulated by GM in any way.

DEXRON-VI
DEXRON-VI was introduced in 2005. It was designed to replace all prior specifications, and is therefore backward-compatible with applications calling for DEXRON of any type. The specification (GMN 10060) defines both a performance level and specific additives that provide improved shift feel, friction durability and oxidative stability compared to earlier specified fluids.
So I guess the correct question is has anyone tried DEXRON VI rather than Dex/Merc?

Question regarding reading the dispstick. When checking the fluid HOT, it seems that the dipstick will read differently when inserted with the "HOT" sided facing back or front of the engine compartment. For example, when I insert it with the "HOT" side facing the front of the vehicle the fluid is spotty and high up on the stick (too much fluid), but when inserted facing the rear, the fluid marks cleanly, but low on the stick (too little). I've since been inserting and checking it facing the back since the fluid makes a consistent mark. Could some of you give this a try and see if your is the same?

That dipstick is a PITA. I am tempted to pay someone to read mine. Different reads are typical. I have noticed that it depends which way you have it facing, thats a great comfort. Must be because of the slope of the dipstick tube. I take issue too that oil only seems to register within the hash type marks and not along the length of the stick like one might find on the engine oil stick. I did my flush and found the hardest part of it was trying to verify what my oil level is afterward. :x

I did this today - last time it was easy enough because I just put back in what came out of it. This time, the hose coughed out of the jug and shot fluid all over the ground, so I had a hard time figuring out how much needed to go back in. I eventually just went with the HOT side towards the ground.

I repeated the same procedure I used last time - drain, replace with Dex III, run through a couple more quarts of that out the cooler hose, and then flush through 3 quarts of Mobil, which by that time was running out a much clearer red, but I was running out of fluid. The last 3 quarts were pure Mobil-1 synthetic fluid. That stuff is wayyyy to expensive to run a full case of it through, so I figure with that procedure I get a good % of the synthetic fluid in there.

My shifting is much improved - you can barely tell when it changes gear anymore. I don't remember as much of a significant difference last time. Maybe for my driving habits I need to change it more than every 2 1/2 years/50,000 miles. Maybe I'll do it again when I hit 200,000.

The fluid that came out of it didn't smell burnt, but it was pretty nasty.
