Arapahoe Basin. Super warm, probably 45-50°F. That yeti was a woman, part of a Mountain Dew promo party that started in the afternoon.

The snow was pretty bad, and it was cloudy most times, so my brain was frantically trying to let me know ("itself know"?) how to position myself for the upcoming balance/CG requirements. It was a matter of processing what my eyes picked out and adjusting quickly. That was my biggest takeaway from yesterday... vision and comprehension processing speed. It's not as fast as it used to be.

I was borrowing the boots and the snowboard, plus it was my first time on a mountain in over a decade. Better conditions would have made it much easier.

Snowboarding is unforgiving, it's all edge control. Wrong balance = catching your edge = hard fall forward or back. My 51-year-old body isn't as agile or strong, obviously.

In the 90s we would do backcountry just a mile or two north of A-Basin, taking turns driving while the others got out, strapped on and took off down the mountain, usually powder in trees. We'd blast out of the woods and onto a beginner slope at Loveland and into the parking lot, and do it again. No phones, no helmets, no beacons. Dangerous and fun. Heck, just driving in the mountains in winter was dangerous then without backup equipment.

Oh, I learned how to ski at A-Basin and Loveland! Great little mom & pop hill where the parking lot was at 10,500 ft elevation (!) It went up way above timberline so there were vast open bowls and meadows and steeps to ski on. No tunnel yet - my dad took us over Loveland Pass in a Ford wagon with probably Town & Country snow tires on the back only. 12,000 feet, very few guard rails. WOOT!
