I replaced the alarm siren on my 2004 S60. a few weeks ago. This thread was very useful. One note, I used my small channel lock pliers on the security bold and it came out with no issues (no need to cut a slot in it with a dremel power tool). I put it back the same way. I know some said theirs was rusted solid, but mine was at least clean. I ordered the pop rivets on amazon and the best price I found on a new siren was at niellovolvoparts.com. I split the old siren open and the red wire was disintegrated all the way to the connector and the battery looks like it leaked and fried two capacitors. That is more work than I would have wanted to take on, so I am glad I purchased a new siren. The dealership wanted $80 more for the siren, who knows how much they would have charged to put it in!

Another note on opening your siren if you are going to replace the battery. I used my utility knife to score the seam between the gray and black plastic. After I had a good score, I used my wood chisel around each edge and it popped open with a fairly clean break (I could have super-glued it back if the electronics weren't trashed.

Hello: Thank you for your very detailed method of changing the siren alarm. Followed your instructions and it came out great! Just need to find out how to program alarm but the sunroof works again without a hitch! TY again for being detailed on this subject

I agree with the post above. The module bracket is fixed on the chassis with a regular screw which protrudes into the engine bay. It can be grabbed with some pliers from the engine bay side and unscrewed. Then a regular hex screw can be placed to keep the bracket for the new siren module.

Could someone help me to determine C19? 1pf? The cap is destroyed on my one. I just want to restore it.

This is the bolt that keeps the siren module bracket in place. Picture from the engine bay side. To get access to the bolt, remove the upper half of the ECM box, like shown in this video

Hi All,

2005 XC70 bought used December 2015

I removed the siren module last week and installed a new battery. The battery was going dead after 3-4 days of being parked. The alarm never did work. I sealed the wire harness but won't be installing a new module($$$).

Should this end the battery drain issue? So far so good. The message comes on at start up, but I just clear it. The red dash indicator continues to blink. The sunroof works as it did before.

Anything else I need to look at?

For my 2000 S80 T6 I found the a simple and quick fix for the annoying "alarm service system required" . One day I realized that no one is going to steal a 16 year old Volvo and I never leave valuables in it or any other car. So I didn`t and don`t lock it. Amazingly the message for some reason never appears anymore. It is an extraordinarily cheap and easy fix.

Simply unplugging the siren module worked for me (error message gone, moonroof working again). 2006 XC70. The only thing I would add is that drilling out the rivets wasn't so simple in my case because they just kept spinning in place. I had to use pliers and brute force to pull them out. Otherwise, I was able to fold back enough of the wheel well plastic and easily unplugged the siren using a flathead screwdriver. Error message re alarm service required and non-functional moonroof issues immediately solved. Hopefully the issue does not recur.
