Is your VVt the old spring type?...did you notice any end at fully anti-clockwise?

Yes, it is a spring type vvt hub. Never experienced one before so cannot compare. But it did rotate to retard position on its own after you rotate forward by hand while belt is off. The rotation is/was close to 3-4º.

What stood out after replacing the new hub is the effort it took to rotate the vvt hub. Older one will rotate while gripping with one hand, while new will NOT rotate with one hand -- I used two hand to check that it rotated.

What I am trying to say is the screw bottomed out in the threaded hole and the last two threaded 'tapped' the incomplete threads to reach full depth.
If this happened, there should be no real damage to the screw or the tapped hole. Measure the thickness to be clamped by this screw and determine if it is too long. Inspect the bottom of the hole to see if there is more than minor thread forming by the screw.

Most taps have a bevel on end of the thread of several threads before they create the full thread form that will match the screw.

Getting closer to installing the upper engine stabilizer mount. The long flange screw is 10x1.5x70 with ring of material. Here is the pix of location at the back of the block where it fastens the mount -- a pass through thread, there is no bottom. How to restore so it can take torque?

Sorry my question was did you notice any end play when turned fully anti clockwise (retarded) in your old or new cvvt hub?

I dont know much about variable timing?.my vvt hub has an odd amount of play at the one end, just wondering if this is design or wear and if the hub would ever actually be in this position when running.

What conditions would see the vvt hub fully in the anti clockwise position.

Another question, do you have the part number for the vvt hub?.
I can only find only 9497786 part number, doesnt say if its spring type or not.

Houston, I've a problem!

t-belt after 2 1/4 rotation at crankshaft in an effort to verify timing marks - crank wouldn't rotate ccw back:

It only cranks forward this far (see timing marks for reference), the belt is EXTREMELY tight between crank-idler-intake:

Thank you Pete!

Restored the crank and cams to timed positions by-hand, turning little CCW at a time. It may take a final mm adjustment before t-belt procedure.

VIDA procedure for vvt adjustment + installing t-belt vs. just t-belt replacement, I find myself in the middle. Seeking clarity since the camlock tool is off.

The vvt exhaust timing mark is restored to corresponding timing notch on engine timing cover.

IF the t-belt only goes on when the hub is preloaded THEN, do I turn exhaust cam CCW to full retard position by-hand first? Then advance (preload) vvt so the cam timing mark aligns with relative mark on engine timing cover AND then slip the t-belt over?

TIA.

Amazing details. Found several discussion on similar challenges. Here are 2 pertinent to my situation:

Yes, the horizontal notches on the rear are the camshafts are the camshafts datums.

The horizontal notches on the rear of the cams are off centered. Correctly aligned the Intake cam horizontal notch will be above center and the Exhaust cam horizontal notch will be below center. The camshaft alignment tool can produce this alignment and none other ... you cannot install the tool wrong.
Here is a corroborating pix showing two horizontal notches. Does it confirm that the two cams are within the alignment range?
