Well, I figured out why the starter had made the spinning sound in the '99 V70 XC AWD. It wasn't a bad bendix. The flywheel has a few mangled and missing teeth.

With the starter motor out, I popped off the right wheel and turned the engine by hand. I couldn't see clearly but managed to take a video of two full revolutions.

Is a new flywheel pretty much the only option?

Ouch, that doesn't look good. I don't think there's an option other than a new flywheel.

If you want to replace it, I have one in the shed from my V70 with good teeth! I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure it's the same for the 4 speed auto.

Bruno...someone managed to crank that puppy while running , which is quite an achievement.remote starter maybe?

Changed the timing belt/tensioner/idler, water pump, and front and rear cam seals on the R today. The car still runs, so I’d say it went smoothly!

Hopefully I can get the Miata sold soon so I can get the ECU tuned and take care of everything else. Time to get this project done and move onto the next one!

Pleats! That almost made me spit out my coffee!

When I took off the old starter, I fished the missing piece of the bell housing from the flywheel. Breaking that piece (not by me, I don't think) was quite an achievement!

Ouch, somebody really did a number on that flywheel and starter!

According to the parts diagrams the flywheel I have should be compatible with your XC, I'll double check in a little bit to see if there's a number on mine. Just let me know if you want it!

Morning all, I am trying to join the legions of legally inspected cars. There is a specific post I cant seem to find that mentioned an alternative drive cycle like a 20 minute highway drive that would clear the readiness monitors. I constantly monitor my emissions readiness with the torque pro app. I took a long drive yesterday (300 miles) and about 20 minutes or so into my drive the catalyst monitor changed to "ready". I've been trying to clear that one for months but I live currently in a small town with no highways. I was ecstatic that all monitors were finally complete. When I got to my destination I of course shut off the vehicle and drove it again an hour later only to see the catalyst monitor as "not ready" again. Does the catalyst monitor reset at every drive? My mechanic friend doing the inspection advised me to come by the shop if it clears again and just leave it idling so the monitor doesn't clear again. Anyway, I would much rather do the longer trip than all of the 2 min and 6 min and stopping to idle drive cycles at specific rpm.

Many states allow one or two "NOT READY" monitors to pass. I believe Texas allows one.

For vehicles year model 1996 – 2000, we allow two (2) non-continuous monitors to be Not Ready and still pass the test, but three (3) or more Not Ready's will cause the vehicle to fail.
