It was actually kind of nice to have the dialogue and type in some numbers to shorten the time. However I think just as vtl said that I might still have a hardware problem.

Is there anything I can improve here? Of course I added the gnd between OBD and Teensy.

If not I will have to get some CF160. Maybe somebody here in Europe who got some laying around? :)
Hi i have a pcb without components like the One on page 48 i can send you

Thanks guys! I happily take the CF160. Gonna send you a pm :) I also looked up the TJA1048. You don’t get this specific IC in Europe but I found the TJA1042 (TJA1048 = 2x TJA1042 from what I found) which is available at Reichelt in Germany so I also ordered two of those. If that one works as well it’s gonna be a good alternative for the ones on this side of the pond.

Never done that before will look into it. If anybody knows now it works you could save me some time.

Right now I trying to figure out a way to breakout USB D- & D+ to the shield. It looks like I could do it with 2.5 mm Pogo Pins to the D+ & D- pads on the bottom.

The idea is a USB pin connector on the Shield. Then one could reuse the case and cable from a old ODBII interface such as a VAG KKL or one of the many cheap things we bought over the years and are just collecting dust.

The PCB in this VAG KKL is the same length and about 7 mm wider then a Teensy 4.0. I got some room to work with.
Anybody know a source for the USB to 4 pin header cable in the picture?
I can find the plastic cases, J1962 connectors but not the cables.

TJA1046, TJA1448, TJR1448 and TJA1059 are also Dual CAN. You might look for some of them. Check the specs over before you buy. Let me know what find in Europe. I might switch my target to something that on both sides of the big pond.

It is an EDA suite that runs entirely in a web browser. Not sure if you've had any experience with EDA systems, but this is how all the electronics is made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroni ... automation You basically draw a schematic, prepare a bill of materials, create a PCB of the needed configuration (dimensions, layers, etc), place the components and route the traces, either manually or automatically. EasyEDA does it all, plus you can make a purchase of the PCB, even with the components soldered.

I'm not a pro in electronics (nor in software), but this is my latest discovery, and I like it, by most part. Might be a wrong choice for a device of any significance, but the cracker is very simple.

I was referring to making builds available to anybody via the EasyEDA website.

I know what EasyEDA is. I have an account there. Just never used it for anything except for drawing Schematics.

Sh4rp is volunteering to do the PCB. I just need to draw the Schematic, figure out which components to use and the basic layout of the board so that it will fit most of the OBDII plugs people have laying around. Sh4rp can do the artwork. When we are done you should be able to drop it in any of the standard OBDII plugs the size used for VAG KKL or larger.

Right now I'm coming up short on board length to get it to fit in the cases I want it to fit in. There is a third type of J1962 connector that not so common. It called a folded J1962. The pins are folded and you surface mount the J1962 on the edge of the board. One row on top of the board and the other row on the bottom of the board. At first glance it it looks like I could gain 3 - 4 mm worth of space on the length. That should be enough. Need to find a Mechanical drawing of a Folded J1962 so I can do the math.

Another advantage of a Folded J1962 is that it places the board in the center of the vertical height of the OBDII case. That leaves room to do things on both sides. I have already figured out the Dual CAN transceiver will fit between the Teeny 4.0 and the Shield wit 0.8 mm of clearance. That leaves the entire other side of the Shield to do something else. Thinking of putting the artwork there for K-line. Perhaps a Led Tactical switch so programing can be activated without opening the case or jumping pins on the J1962 connector. The OBDII cases have a standard position for the 3.5mm LED. If I can layout the Led Tactical switch in the correct position the 3.5mm hole would need drilled out to accommodate the switch. For cases that don't have a hole for a 3.5mm LED I'll be able to tell one exactly where to drill and how much.

I been trying to accommodate the connector on some of the OBDII USB cables. Looking like it would be better to say cut the connector off and hard wire it to the Shield. Some of the USB cables are hard wired. A pad for hard wiring would make more efficient use of space because Sh4rp would not need to allocate space for the thickness of the connector.

An alternative to installing a programing switch is to map out the location of the Teeny programing switch. Drill a hole at that location. Then to put the Teensy in programing mode you use a straighten out paper clip to push the switch, like you do when resetting a router, Modem or Cable box. That would be fewer parts.

Nice cable for bench testing. J1962 breakout. Only $4.60 free shipping from China.

Just plug it into any interface with a J1962 connector.

MVS member jcdillin designs PCB's as a side job. He did a custom board way back in Oct 2020. Did he ever get it cracking?
He has not check in since May 19 2021.
