Thanks Pete. If I had just brought it home I would have had a go at refurb myself like in the video. However a 'pro' who was asked to check if it ran decided to take it upon themselves to take it apart to check it out and then pronounced it had bad primary windings, badly worn slip rings and regulator and it would cost $250 to rebuild which is about what a rebuilt Bosch on can be found for with a 2 year warranty not one.
I took it to another shop who tried to test it but it would not even allow them to power it up. So I am thinking it was sabotaged to get me to pay for a repair. As I did not see what they had done in the first shop as they took it out of my sight I did not want to get into it. I'll wait and get another down the line. Thanks for the info though.
Neil.

Any real alternator rebuilder would offer much more than a 1 year warranty. Some Napa's offer the service and it was at least 3 year warranty.scot850 wrote: ↑19 Feb 2023, 06:52 Thanks Pete. This makes me think the exciter wire isn't able to kick-start things & you might have an open circuit on your regulator between the exciter pin and positive terminal on your alt.;
Do you get the dash light with the key on / engine off, or not? If you don't, then your reg. is probably shot like mine was.

It was one I pulled from a junkyard out of an 04 C70. It had been rear-ended, so unless that was because it had broken down for the alternator having failed, it was a fairly low risk purchase. So no idea about what the actual condition was. I wanted it tested before putting any effort into it and possibly buying a new regulator for it to keep on the shelf. Too many other projects just now on the shelf needing done so decided to return it and get another one down the line. Hence trying to find alternate part numbers, especially if some P2 models are the same it opens up the potential options.
Thanks for the info. I did look at a YouTube on re-building and checking an alternator and I thought about it but decided no time for that and the 30 day return/exchange was almost up so returned for credit which was spent immediately on other 'stuff'.

Same here, except I just keep entire spare cars on hand, haha...
Seriously though, it amazes me how many things can be fixed by simply cleaning things. So much better to fix the known factory part than rely on anything aftermarket, even if claimed to be OEM...
