You are right, its just that the engine has brand new oil in it that I don't want to waste

If we remove the pan and don*t see any signs of overheat or play in the rod bearings then there is no point in takin them apart ?

You can inspect rod bearings once the pan is out, it's not that difficult. Pan removal/installation is more laborious process anyways.

You can also push on crankshaft at the ends to feel it has any sign of slack. That would be really bad, likely the end of the engine.

Also collect and reuse the oil if you want. Maybe filter it before pouring back.

This evenings findings:

1. We changed the gearbox 1,5 years ago and now when the pan is off the car I could easy feel the bolts between the flywheel and torque converter. They where all loose and now I'm hoping this could have been the rattle from my engine.

2. The rod bearings have all play side to side and feels really smooth, no play at all up and down. This must be a good thing ?
Did also check for play in the crankshaft side to side, but there is no visual play at all.

The pan will enjoy a soaking bath in machine cleaning detergent.

That's good news, I expect thats the cause of your horrible engine sound. I had a Corvair years ago that had a very small crack in the flywheel and it made the engine sound like it was coming apart, similar to yours. How long did it take you to get the oil pan off?

Eek that pan is filthy! Good clean of that and the pick up, new sealant and good to go.

Your gut was pointing to the torque converter all along, so good diagnosis.

O-rings where? Between the block and the head? No.

It wasn't too bad to get the oil pan removed. Say about 1-2 hours

1. Remove oil dip stick
2. Remove cover under the engine
3. Drain the engine of oil
4. Remove the oil filter
5. Remove the oil cooler from the block
5. Remove the screw holding the fuel line
6. Then start to remove the oil pan but keep 4 bolts.
7. Tap the oil pan lightly using a soft faced mallet.
8. Remove the 4 remaining bolts holding the oil pan in place.
9. Carefully wiggle the oil pan out.
