Front wheel wiggle, rattle, clunk (1996 850)?

well, time for an update. i borrowed an awesome 1" drive socket set from a friend and easily loosened up the axle nut. Then torqued it back down to spec. Still got the same wiggle

, so apparently a too-lose axle nut was not my problem. Guess I gotta think about whether I want to go to the expense and hassle of replacing the hub/bearing.

Okay, final update for the historical record. The hub turned out to be fine, but the ball joint and the sway bar link were shot. The "rattle" noise was indeed the dust shield, which had cracked at one of the mounting points ... a few washers took care of that.
