Hello! Also: Remote Keyless Entry?

Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.

The nut that you can see is actually securing the horn cover. Remove that nut and the cover and it will reveal another nut that holds the horn diaphragm. Clean up the lower nut and the the surface of the diaphragm where the nut makes contact and it might work.

WHY is it that when someone gets in the car, locks the door. Than proceeds to open the door from the inside, the alarm goes off... BUT
when they lock the doors and try to open from the outside, nothing happens. To me it makes no sense. unless they are trying to catch someone who has just broken your window and opened the car from the inside. *lets just hope they dont hit the unlock door button or pull the plunger up lol* or did i just hit the nail on the head and not my thumb?
The answer to your question is, the alarm is triggered by the "door open" switch.
The same one that tell the dome light to come on. Virtually ALL car alarms work like this.
I've never seen a system that triggers off of a handle lift.
Sure, you could accomplish it, but it would have to be custom.
And once the neighborhood kids figured it out, you'd probably disable it inside a week! :lol:

Hey works for me. haha, I dont know, something about as a kid growing up I always thought that if you lifted up on the handle, the car alarm would go off.

These directions were spot on...It now honks(though very weirdly...not the nice professional honk that comes from the central horn...but rather from the bell)...when I open the door from the inside..if the alarm is engaged...But hey it works on both my Volvos!!!

Those pictures and descriptions were incredibly helpful. I thought the little fastener on the outside of the alarm dealie was the one that needed to be tightened.

SO- I have taken that off, taken off the plate underneath, and looked at what was going on underneath.
There was a washer between the plate I took off and the nut underneath.
The nut that's sitting underneath- is it supposed to be screwing on tightly as well, or do the washer and the thing on the outside of all of it serve to keep it tight? If it's supposed to screw on, that thing is completely stripped. It pulls off with no resistance.

If it's supposed to be loose, cleaning things up didn't help. I still get flasher response when tripping the alarm but no audibility whatsoever.

When the "membrane" was referred to above- does that simply mean the metal that's underneath that nut, or is there supposed to be an actual membrane of different material on there?

Hi AnnaCB,

Everything is supposed to be hand tight....not too tight that you break something...but tight enough that there is no back and forth movement of the big circular disk...so tighten away...and brace yourself for the weird audibility.

So it's normal for the nut underneath to be tightened only by the thing on the outside? Just seems odd, like it ought to be screwing in as well.

The lower nut should be tight, you can actually change the pitch of the horn depending on how tight it is. The upper nut just holds the cover on and it needs to be tight enough that it doesn't fall off, some Locktite wouldn't hurt a bit on that one.

Well, I guess I know what the problem is. The nut is completely stripped, I can't even attempt to screw it on.

Any idea if this is a custom item, or if it's a standard nut that I might be able to find somewhere without replacing the whole horn assembly before trying to fix the little part, first?

Might be a stupid question, but I know very little about, uh, the nuts and bolts of... yeah. :P

If it is stripped a junk yard is your next stop but don't pay much since it may or may not work either. None of mine do and I haven't bothered to fix any of them yet
