A photo is worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting them.

Another useful note for this specific case. Installing the spring correctly as depicted in the photos is much more difficult than installing it incorrectly. It requires much more effort and great care to install the spring correctly.

Remember: "If it was easy you probably installed it wrong"

Great sight and thanks for posting your issue. I had installed the spring incorrectly on my 2001 S60. I new it was something I did but never figured something so small could cause such a major issue. I was about to spend major dollars on a master cylinder or brake booster.

I saw a used S60 for sale and lowered the sale price by $1000 because he had the same poor brake response because he put the springs on wrong. Bingo!

Great post.
I had a 'mechanic' friend who told me that (for my S70) "ah those springs don't matter/do anything". I said "...WTF? - You better PUT THEM back on." Lol

Thanks

Excellent,

changed my brake pads this weekend and had almost no brakes. Exactly as described in the post.
Found post this morning, borrowed screwdriver and plyers over lunch and 10minutes later the clips were in correct position without even taking the wheels off. 5minute test drive later and everything ok.

Thanks to all contributers especially E170 for the pics

Unrelated to the springs but referring to the op's question if there is something special about bleeding ABS, I learned the hard way on an early Audi A4 that you always bleed ABS equipped vehicles with the engine running, not sure if that still applies to these newer Volvos but don't see how it would hurt either.

Jan: The picture you posted of the correct disk pad retainer spring position is MONEY !! I had the "squishy petal" syndrome after changing my pads, and it was the retainer spring problem.

Amazing that just such a small difference in a little spring makes that much difference to the brakes.

This is one very useful thread. I find it very encouraging cause I have gone through the same brake spring exercise: We create a problem, then we solve it, and then finally we call ourselves 'The Problem Solvers'
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
