New Transmission Shifting Issue

My 98 has wimpy AWD also. It engages but it takes some wheelspin to get it done. When these were new cars the engagement was pretty quick with very little noticeable front wheel spin before power flow to rear started. I have some staining at midpoint of viscous coupling where oil has escaped. I guess the silicone fluid must lose its effectiveness when some component of it leaks out. I guess its time I pull prop shaft and see how lose it is feels when I apply park brake and turn the flange by hand.

Jimmy57, I have just installed a 99 transmission in my 98 glt turbo, and I am having the same issues as GEM-Mass.( hope GEm don't mind I abbreviated his name). Can I do the same thing to my 98 glt, as in take the sensors off the 98 and place on 99 and it will work in the s mode as well as the e mode.
The salvage yard indicated that the 99 was a direct replacement, but the wires on the speed sensor were cut and when I tool the speed sensor out of my 98 I saw that there was a difference in the two, so I left the 99 sensor in the 99 trans, and when I test drove it my heart sank when the trans would not change gears, I also had the flashing up arrow, one other thing I noted is the difference in the shift levers from 98 to 99 the 99 is longer.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, it was a lot of work changing the transmission out.

Yes swap the sensors so you have the analog ones from the 98 original box that match the requirements of your 98 TCM.
I don't believe the shift lever is an issue.

I just bought a 98 Volvo V70 XC off of a guy on craigslist and this is exactly whats going on with it and why he was selling it. He really didnt have much info on the car but for $600 it came with new tires and a third row seat so I didn't think I'd be out to much if I couldnt get it shifting. How can I (never been under a hood in my life) tell if the transmission in it has been replaced with a 99? I did get the carfax and I noticed it had "transmission service" not long ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !
