I did not pull pin on tensioner. I thought I was to wait until all was right. And the slack seemed....not right. I suspect i am wrong about that.

Yes, intake is pulling the exhaust.
Yes, exhaust shaft is turning. Sprocket is attached and not moving independantly.

OKay: Are you saying that as long as the marks are lining up consistantly I should NOT worry about the slack between the cams. That it will roll out with tensioner when i pull the pin?

That's so obvious... but i didn't want to release the pin prematurely and make things more difficult if i had to re-do...I am using a bungee on the tensioner to keep it taught. I know that is not the same. Plus, i think i just had this little step backwards. Well, that is good news...i'm a boob, but it is good news none-the-less.

When i go back i will check again to see that the bolts are centered in the sprockets. Recheck my marks...then pull the pin, and rotate CW to check.
i will report back.
i really appreciate it.

The rear (exhaust) cam will tend to turn a few degrees from the valve spring pressure on the lobes. It's ok to turn everything a little tiny bit to get the belt lined up.

If you have a bench vice you can reload the tensioner. Just place it in the jaws, tighten it a half a turn, wait, tighten another half turn, repeat till it's closed and put the pin in - make sure the pin is in the right side first - you can put it on the engine-facing side and not be able to remove it. Been there, done that.

thanks. ...just didn't want to have to reload the tensioner unless necessary (silly part to be lazy on, right?).
and, yes, thanks, comforting to know that it IS okay to turn everything a bit.
hope to get back to it for a little today or tuesday.
