Thanks for all of the responses and yes I live about an hour away from MAcon. I will definitely try all of these routes before a tranny replacement. I don't think I will get it rebuilt. I keep heaingr that the rebuilts are crap.

I don't know why a rebuilt transmission would be 'crap'. Usually transmission shops have years of experience and feedback on the parts that fail in transmissions and improvements that have been made to make the transmissions better than when they were initially built. Eg. new and improved parts This is the case of the guy at Tripleedge. He knows what are the weaknesses and what if anything can be done to strengthen/reduce the weaknesses...

So there is a leak in the radiator. Checking it out as soon as I get a chance.

I know it has been a while, but I need some more information.
Can anyone show me where the output speed sensor is on a s80 2.9 tranny? A picture would be ideal.
I tried to sell the car, but too many people tried to low ball me. I am not sure if I will fix it or not, I just want to know where these sensor(s) are located. I did more research on the symptoms of a bad speed sensor and many people say that it will cause their car to have the same problems as mine.

There are two speed sensors. One is inside the left end of the transmission, requires the engine and trans to be tipped down on the left after subframe under engine and trans has been lowered. This would be the input speed sensor.
The other is on the right end of trans which is behind the engine down low. This is road speed sensor also called VSS.
here is a youtube of the location and gives an idea of the work involved for the ISS:

The GM made transmission in your car is a 4T65 which is mostly the same as as 4T60. 4T60 is lighter duty version but the differences between 4T65 and 4T60 are in the heft of some of the internals, service is the same for the two.

In February, I posted this topic and dcarlson referred me to Dave at tripleedgeperformace. I contacted him through email and after lengthy expaination of my problem, with my speedometer misreading the speed, he suggested that the previous owner installed either a new tranny or a new TCM. He said that the gear ratios were probably off causing my car to have these symptoms.

you replied to a gentleman who was having similar issues to mine. You stated that if the gear ratios were incorrect then the TCM would be commanding the solenoids for the 4th gear, but gear ratios were set to 3rd gear. My car will drive in 1st and 2nd all day long, it's when you reach 3rd that it "gets stuck" or goes into limpmode.
Since dave suggested this may be the case, how would I go about repairing this?
Any information would be appreciated!

Speedometer on dash is fed via the CAN from ABS control module and as I understood it the TCM uses the VSS off the transmission case for primary shift control. The CAN speed signals for left and right wheels are used as a go/no go decision as a difference between those two means you a re turning and torque steer will be worse if a shift occurs then.
There is one failure type where the planetary final drive set in the RH end of trans close to where the VSS is located has a failure and metal will contaminate the VSS.
Remove the VSS (pictured in the link in post above) and see if it has metal "fuzz" on it.
DO you know the fault codes from your car? Has the car been scanned for codes in every module by a capable tool?
There is one failure type where the planetary final drive set in the RH end of trans close to where the VSS is located has a failure and metal will contaminate the VSS.

I do have the codes. I have also found the equivelant meaning in what I call the volvo DTCs:
P1618 (ECM-530D) - Mechanic said it was a speed sensor (according to identifix.com)
P0751 (TCM-000B) - Shift solenoid A performance stuck off/ 1-2 solenoid valve performance
P0117 (ECM-2000) - Engine coolant temperature low input
P1330 (ECM-640F) - Camshaft Actuator? (Couldn't find clear definition)
P0010 (ECM-6400) - Camshaft position actuator circuit
According to the papers the mechanic gave me, the p1330 and p0010 are related and the fix lies in fixing the camshaft reset valve or the like. Also, according to https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 11&t=18091, p1618 and p0751 are typical of a speed sensor malfunction. (Hence the reason I asked about the speed sensor.) The mechanic also gave me a printout of p1618 problems in other volvos and others have replaced the VSS and wheel sensors.
What do you think? Am I on to something here?
