Thanks a bunch- I was looking at that relay and it says "multipurpose" Does this mean that it also controls other things (horn, remote entry, fog lights and horn)? Or does this mean that it functions the same and you'll find this same relay up under the knee bolster panel?

I found the identical relays under the main fuses (under hood) in the elongated rectangular box- horn/alarm, relieve relay (whatever that is). I suppose I can use one of them to try in my diagnostics. Btw, the part number I get (cross referenced in VADSIS in parenthesis) is 9494424

Well, I was sort of right- these in that location are all listed as "Relay Relieve" in VADIS- without knowing what they do, I hesitate to try them. The horn relay (which I would try) doesn't show a location- it is floating away from the other relays in the picture and listed as "202." Not sure where it is- maybe under the knee bolster in that panel. Does anyone know before I start pulling things apart.

Okay- replaced the relay and the same thing happens so it's not the relay. :(

Any other suggestions?

I was afraid so (you mentioned prior about other not starter related weird things happening). Was it happening with relay out? My point is to figure out which portion of the wiring is damaged (if that is the case). If it did, then the problem is between the relay socket and the starter, if not, then between ignition switch and relay.

I have gotten tired of dealing w this and gone to the lake. In the meantime I havecar rigged a button to start the car. It engages as long as my finger is on the start button. This is a stopgap measure goo for keeping me from burning my arm each me I want to start it. I still am looking for the root cause and thus solution. Beginning to wonder if the new starter was installed wrong although symptoms are the same as before it was replaced.

Re: Ignition switch...is it now springing back as it should? Does twitching the key make any difference whatsoever?

Does moving the steering column up and down make any difference at all?

Dude...
All this jumping from here to VS is makin' me dizzy...
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/15 ... s-running/

But here's the question I posted over there earlier:

"My real question is - What happens with the relay removed?

Pull it, - leaving the green wire connected to the starter -
then jumper the starter solenoid with the key on and see what happens.

This will give you a better idea of whether the
problem is before or after the starter relay.
"

Now, I need some more coffee so I can keep up with both sites. :D

I'm on the boat but can answer because i've tried this it's a no-start w/o the relay. Yes, the key bounces back to II on it's own but no need to switch the key to III -it starts at II anyway if the relay is incerted. Interesting the 10A fuse is no longer blowing.

The starter should always engage when it's jumpered at the solenoid.
When I say jumpered, I mean hot wire it by putting power from the big positive
post on the starter to the small connection the green wire attaches to.

Driving back the "default setup is for the green wire to be pas to the solenoid. All i'm trying to do is set things up in the car to run as normally aas possible. Unfortunately, if thedefaut setup is used, the starter spins in key position 2 and continues to spin until thecar is tuned off completelyor the solenoid connection is broken.
