I would not. I suggest that you disconnect the heater core lines on the outside of the firewall and connect them with a 5/8" hose.

Why not just get ready and take off both kick plates and the plates next to the heater core. That way, if it is leaking a lot, you can put a shop cloth under the core and catch the antifreeze until the core gets delivered. Removing the kick plates is 1/2 the job.

After installing the new core, leave the kick plates off for a couple of cycles, just so you can spot any new leaks.

Emptying out about 1-2 quarts of antifreeze from the block just before you disconnect the core will solve most issues and you will not need to clamp the hoses. You will always need a plastic bag (think grocery shopping size) without holes(!) to put under the core and the line connections as you remove the core. Of course, a couple of locking vice grips at the engine side of the firewall does eliminate the need for draining antifreeze. Just don't squeeze so hard that the hose gets damaged.

I did both my AC evap and heater core (another thread) and did run the coolant out and replaced with just water. That made the replacement less messy and saved me cleaning time.

I replaced the bulkhead connector and the Orings on the core using IPD parts. Heater core was Behr, as was the original.
