So you don't know what Vida Dice is or you don't understand how it works?

Neither! BUT I just looked it up. What is the cheapest way in? Can it do a lot? I'll research tommorrow but if you could share your wisdom I would be very appreciative. My vehicle is a 2001 V70XC AWD with 217,000 mi so I don't need the latest model. I'm finding out that I have hardly kept pace with modern technology.

Vida Dice is pretty much "essential reading" for any DIY Volvo enthusiast for cars over '98 vintage. Vida alone can give part numbers and repair procedures also code meanings.

If you buy the whole system including the communication device called Dice from one of the sellers on eBay look for good feedback. Cost is around $160-$170

You can download a playable image of Vida software using this thread for free: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =9&t=55027

and start having a play with the system. I've used it for a week now and the image seems mostly bug free.

generic obd ii code was again P1620 ... not investing in VidaDice as I have doubts we will keep this car.

Brand new MAF here - part is 30713512 for this car. Did not leave ignition to "ON" for 10 minutes as when we received first Xemodex last yr there was zero issue - slap it in, turn it on and everything great.

I would leave it on for 10 min now but not sure I should as the ETM makes a whining noise constantly when ignition on... have to search around here and see if that is normal - Tony at Xemodex said it shouldn't be making any noise when the car is running - didn't ask re just in 'on' position.

Brake pedal sensor must not be issue - swapped it with another one from a functioning car (same part #) and it made no difference.

Replaced relay and fuse.... no change. Brand new spark plugs - no change.

It's a mystery and we are fresh out of ideas - guess it's a tow to the shop.

P1620 equates to engine cooling fan low speed problem. http://equus.com/Dtc

You won't find me giving anyone genuine part numbers when there is a Bosch equivalent at half the price. The number I provided was for the turbo version. If yours is non turbo you have a Denso sensor with a different number.

I doubt that code will serve you to find the problem

I was looking here - http://forum.carpartseuro.com/Books/Fau ... s-0894.pdf

This page that looks like it came from a manual shows it could be -wiring, MAF, MAP, TO regulating valve, ETS, or ECM

Can't find anywhere what TO regulating valve is and mechanics don't know what it is referring to either.

Will go back to mechanic for code reading but it showed ETM last time... his code reader was red and the size of a laptop... is there a way to know if he is really using VIDAS/DICE or something more generic that will only continue the guessing game?

That's why you need Vida/Dice but I guess if your mechanic doesn't mind reading codes for a living.....

Autel EU-702 will read this car properly and has the ability to be reprogrammed for Japanese or domestics making it a great investment.

A Vida/Dice setup is a laptop (can be your own loaded with Vida s/w) with a device like a small box (Dice) plugged into the USB port and this also has a plug which goes into the OBD II port.

Vida/Dice costs around $170

The Autel EU-702 is around $140

Thanks for the details - good to know that the Autel is so versatile... a good point to get all my siblings to go in on one. Only problem might be -- do they work on Macs?

Not sure why the new mechanic reads codes for free but it hasn't hurt his business any! At this point, since he is a distributor for xemodex, I'll let them hash it out between them to get to the root of the problem. I'm wondering why you ordered a Sacer for your client instead of a Xemodex? client preference or just trying new things?

sacer is the sensor that XeModex use and costs..... far less around 1/4 .

Autel scanner is standalone-requires no PC
