P0172 - not sure where to start 1997 850NA

Post by BlackThunder »

So I've just gotten this code. Can it be ANYWHERE in the vacuum system that could be causing this problem? I was working on my ABS module and I think I may have broken one of the purple lines that is coming off of the air box. But that's not part of the vacuum system is it?

1997 Volvo 850 N/A

Thanks,

Dustin

Thanks,

I also broke the purple but in two spots and just used a piece of rubber vacuum hose to join them together.

Ok, thanks. I"ll give it a try. I'll have to stop at Auto zone and get some hose. I'm wondering if that is causing my "mixture too rich" code.

"mixture too rich" code + broken vac hose, almost certainly yes.

Hello!

I am having a similar issue. I live in Oregon so with the colder whether I am experiencing a hard start. The only difference is my car doesn't start at all. It used to crank, turn on for a min, then die. Now it just cranks won't start up. I changed the thermostat and temperature sensor but I did not disconnect the battery during the job. Codes read: P0243, P0455. I recently paid a mechanic to look at it and he said it was the fuel pump and filer. Otherwise, my car runs fine when it is warm out! Please any help would be appreciated.

Unplug the connector the the mass airflow sensor, attempt starting the engine. If it start up and idles fine, even responds to the gas pedal, replace the mass airflow sensor.

I just replaced the fuel pump and it didn't make a difference. Pull your fuel pump relay, take it in the house for about an hour and then put it back in. Start the car. I did this after replacing the fuel pump and it started up. If it starts and stays running like mine did. I found the part on amazon for $43. A lot cheaper than the already spent 220!
