This is an awesome thread - I'm loving all the pictures, H.

Just thought I'd comment on the PCV kit thing - from my experience with the iPD kit, and Volvo's own, that hose you talk about is supposed to be rigid like that. At least, all three I've come across (one bought from iPd, two from Volvo) have been like that. :)

You should tell her that it is the sweet odor you get before having to walk home and gather the money for a head replacement. LOL

Looks like the pcv had been replaced before. Use only Volvo parts there and you should be able to leave that system alone for a long time (with synthetic oil changes).

The spark plug wire at #2 looks like the boot is torn.

I usually bite the bullet on the VOLVO plugs. Just a 5% increase in fuel economy will make a big difference in cost over 30,000 miles.

I usually never have to deal with the firewall parts when changing the heater core.

Great pics.

I had the PITA "Quick Connect" couplers break on me when I was dealing with the hoses and I just about had a stroke when I priced the replacements at the dealer. It turned out that I was able to buy the entire firewall assembly which came with the clips, spacers, and O rings (both sides of the block) for less money than just the clips through CarQuest. To my amazement it was actually a Blue Box Volvo part with a WorldPac sticker on the bag.

Nice. If you have to mess with it, do it all. Those fire wall mounts are as fragile as the rest of the Volvo plastic. If you can leave it alone, you're better off.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it. Time for more pics...

I've decided to go for the firewall coupler elimination procedure in conjunction with a new heater core... if my heater core wasn't f*cked before I think it is now that I removed it:
Image

the plastic o-ring things crumbled like a sweet tart
Image

planning on reusing the brass elbows from the stock heater hoses. took the dremel to 'em ;)
supplies:
Image

the first one I only cut one side and pried off the crimped connector. that took way longer than it should but I was determined. decided to cut both sides of the second one
Image
Image
Image

still need to gut the coupler..

then I did my rear camshaft seals for the first time:
Image

I didn't have a 3mm allen key and stripped two of the bolts..so, more dremel action!
Image

just as I suspected...leaky. does anyone else have these notches around the intake rear cam seal? I haven't seen them in any other pictures o.O
Image

yoink. I opted for the screw and pull method. worked out well enough
Image

here's the exhaust seal. nasty.. when I went to loosen the lower bolt from the camshaft position sensor the thing was barely finger tight! This thing has been leaking for who knows how long and draining out freely. No wonder there is so much gunk in the area!
Image

out with the old
Image

in with the new
Image

Thanks for looking! Today I ordered my last round of (engine) parts, I hope. Pretty soon you'll be seeing some putting-back-together pictures. And after that suspension work! :D

Update:
Progress has been slow but steady. Hopefully these pictures don't show up huge, but they might. photobucket has been givin me a hard time, so sorry if these pics are stupid big.

replaced the seals and connectors of turbo oil and tranny fluid lines to radiator. it looked like the tranny side had been replaced recently, but I went ahead and did these too because I had the parts and they are cheap.
Image

PTC was super crusty. no pics of it clean but I assure you I did all I could to uncrustify it.
Image

hozes
Image

new behr heater core. I ran it through the dishwasher per the advice I've seen around...you're about to see my version of firewall coupler mod...
Image
Image
Image

I had a little trouble with this hose wanting to kink. not all the way kink but I was worried the heat from coolant might convince it to really kink. I happened to pick up a pack of 40 hose clamps in assorted sizes from harbor freight and threw a couple on this bend to help the hose keep its shape.
Image

heater core lines all hooked up. tell me what you think!
Image

did the turbo oil drain pipe seal and gasket too.
Image
Image

It's rainy today here in central AR so not much getting done, but I oughta be turning the ignition within the next week and will update accordingly.

Cheers!

ALSO,

Can anyone point me to a picture of this connector so I can get the polarity of the wires right when I fix it?
Image
Image

I'm starting the process of re-wrapping a lot of the wiring runs. Like most things, and the connector shown above, the plastic is all super crumbly and generally worn out.

That looks like it goes to the fan relay. If no one has posted back I will take a look tomorrow and let you know.
