If starting fluid improved the firing of the engine that points to a fuel problem...either too much or too little

Check the fuel pressure at the rail to see if it's in specs. Check the fuel pressure regulator and see if fuel has entered the diaphragm through the hose.

It's alive!

I swapped the spark plugs to some el cheapo plugs from the nearest car parts supplier as well as the air filter. When I replaced the air filter, I noticed the air intake hose, between the filter box and throttle body, had a 2" long hole. Almost like someone took a knife and cut into it. I put a bandaid of vulcanized tape on it, really wrapped it up tight and nice. I know that won't hold forever but for now at least the engine starts on first try.

I will still be swapping the spark plugs to volvo OE, but at least now it is not a priority. I actually forgot to check if the ECT code is still there, I'll check that later.
