Perfect! Thank you! Round cap = TRW, hex cap = SMI.

Between pics and descriptions, this thread now has has all necessary information to positively ID a P80 steering rack as SMI or TRW.

Thanks for this tip. Based on everything I had read and my data plate prior I would have concluded I had a TRW rack. Yesterday I replaced my driver side CV axle and I had a good chance to check the cap. I've definitely got the hex cap. Relying on the data plates and/or VIN isn't always a good idea on a '98. I've gotten incorrect parts from the dealer on many occasions and they've double checked when I brought them back only to find that based on the records they gave me the correct part.

Working in the CV axle made me wonder how people get pipe wrench on the inner tie rod. There's not much room to work and maneuver back in there.

Give yourself enough height. I had the car lifted pretty high at all four corners to do the tie rods along with some other work, and it was easy to get a pipe wrench in there. (I do have an SMI rack, though - maybe they're different.)

I ordered the parts today. SMI SMI SMI! This is one of the cheapest parts upgrades I've done and it will hopefully havE a big impact on ride quality. My car starts to vibrate pretty noticeably at about 65 to 70 mph. It feels like the front wheels are wobbling and its very annoying.

Be sure to let us know how this turns out. They must have a lot of play to get a wobble at speed.
