I put SS lags on the fan after having the same battle on my first radiator job.
Remember the bottom two just have to be eased as the fan case is slotted in the bottom two, the top two have to Come out.
I break far fewer fasteners in old age by stopping when I feel excessive breaking torque, ringing the fastener, applying heat and/or lubricant. It's much faster than dealing with drills , ez outs, and other tools of the Devil.

Ya I realize that the bottom 2 just need to be loosened as the fan frame is slotted but those 2 were the toughest to get out so replaced them all. On the starter bolts I knew that they simply pass through the mounting hole in the engine so as long as the head broke off the bolt I could still get the starter out with a bit of hammering. To clean out the mounting hole in the motor I put a bolt through from the opposite direction and just tapped it through to loosen and drive out all the crud. New bolts got a nice coating of never seize that will hopefully help if this needs doing again. Oh, plenty of PB was used prior to attempting starter bolt removal. To borrow a line from advertising, "I use that @#$% on everything".

Those fan bolts suck don't they? I still remember the heads just gouging out and having to lock pliers on them and twist off 1/4 turn at time. I went stainless all around including the bottom ones.

Yes they do indeed, especially when lying on my back. I too thought of the s.s. but figured everything being plastic all I really wanted was a nice hex head to get a wrench on. Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated.
