Re: Best Grade of Gasoline
By the way, I put 93 from Shell on my snow thrower. Not because it makes 5hp more and the Vtec kicks in sooner, but because Shell says it doesn't have ethanol which is gumming the carburetor when the thing is stored for the summer. Now, who knows where the rig is filling the surplus of 87..

If there's one thing that's certain in life, it's that any thread concerning oil or fuel will make it to at least 3 pages.

I use 93 octane unless I stop somewhere and only 91 is available. Shell 90% of the time.
My logic is that with a 20 year old high mileage car stuff’s gonna go wrong and if I’m using top tier fuel that’s one potential cause of any problems that I won’t have to worry about, so it just makes problem solving easier.
I also try to stick to busy gas stations. I figure it’s more likely newer stock that way and they are probably making too much money to get cute with the mixtures

You might be surprised how little the stations make on a gallon. Thus the reason most places are selling donuts, smokes, crappy hot dogs under heat lamp rollers, lottery tickets, etc.!!!!!

Hi,
Hey that makes sense really. Almost everyone is concerned with good oil and gas...and sometimes crappy hotdogs
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

"Formula for converting EURO to US rating
I've also come up with a pretty good formula that approximates US octane rating based on EURO RON rating, and visa versa. The formula is US=RON*(21/22):
EURO RON US (R+M)/2
90 85.9
92 87.8
95 90.7
96 91.6
98 93.5
100 95.5
105 100.2
110 105 "

I put Shell 93 in mine always. I used to put regular because the manual said it's okay, but had poorer fuel economy and lower performance (noticed when merging/passing). It seems like it takes a tank or two of the "good stuff" before any difference is noted. I attribute that to the ECU adjusting fuel trim gradually for timing advances to avoid damage. I want to cry at the price every time I fill up more than 2/3 the tank, but it is worth it in my opinion.
Some have reported that mid-grade (89,90) works well in their vehicle and probably so, but the ethanol loves our rubber hoses and seals.
