You may wish to chase all the head bolt holes with a tap and then blow them out with compressed air. Sometimes oil, coolant, small children, etc will get stuck in the bolt holes and your actual torque yield will be incorrect. One other thing I like to do is torque the bolts down in the afternoon, then torque them again the next morning while sober.

I'd also try a different torque wrench this time - or get your existing wrench calibrated - just in case it is the root cause of the evil.

I think he is a long way from pulling the head but if it comes to that, cleaning out the head bolt holes is not a "you may wish to ..." thing, it is a "and by all means do not forget to ..." thing.

Lol to the small children and sobriety. Luckily, I do not need to pull the head on this one. I am going to be pulling the head on my 99 V70 (which I just found out is an XC with the shaft removed). I think it has a burnt exhaust valve. I will run a tap through the head bolt holes though. The V70 is sort of my practice car. Even though the engine configuration is slightly different, many of the jobs like head gasket require the same procedures to be followed. Hopefully I can use it to build my confidence for my blue S70 and end up with 2 decent running P80's.

You think it has a burnt valve?

There is a V70 AWD model out there that is not XC.

It has 0 compression on cylinder 1 and no signs of HG leaking. Unplugging the coil and/or the injector makes no difference. I think I am going to make a new thread for this topic though.

The rear bumper has been replaced according to the PO whose wife backed it into a utility pole, and the title for the vehicle says V70XC. I know the title doesn't necessarily mean that it is an XC, but it has the AWD hardware, the title indicates it is an XC, and it is a turbo.

I didn't think the other AWD V70 had a turbo. Is that correct?

It seems like it doesn't really matter what model the car is. But for the record, all AWD P80 cars had a turbo.

The V70 AWD was a turbo. Just a lowered V70XC.

Interesting. I will have to see if I can find anything else. I haven't even cleaned it out yet from the PO. The manual may tell me what it is or not. It really doesn't matter. It is an AWD turbo P80 volvo with a suspected burnt valve. I plan to order all necessary parts to remove and reinstall the head, pull the head and see what is going on, order more parts as necessary, replace and put back together.

I'm estimating the total cost to be $1200-1500 if I do it and much more if I have someone else do it.

The only thing I'm a little hazy on is getting all the timing just right when putting it all back together.
