Have an inner tie rod that starts to have a little play. There is a tool to untwist it from there, but I don't want to force on the steering rack. The torque is 60 ft.lb which not far from a wheel lug torque. Volvo has a counter-hold tool.

I'm thinking doing this with the pipe wrench like Robert did on a S70, the S60 seems the same on the passenger side

But you sell it to me and it's no longer in your garage and therefore not fixed!

Am i the only one who buys parts pre-emptively, then loses them in the clutter, then I spend my hours allotted for the job trying to find the part?

I dont waste my time looking.
Just buy another part.
Then find the missing one.
After consideration neither part needs to be installed THAT BAD.

It's the retailer's dream, that we just buy everything because we know we may need it later! It's so easy to store them in the garage. But guess why the place we buy stuff is historically called a "store" anyway? it really does make more sense to have everything gathered in one place for people to get when they need, instead of all of us keeping extras of everything. Then (planned?) obsolescence and convenience and sale prices and a host of other factors creep in, muddling the picture ...

The best of periodically giving Shinola away is I have to dig through my stash looking for it, then I remember what I have.

The pack rat habit. Do I know where to find anything? Sometimes. But the spare car parts I know exactly where to find.

haha!.....no. Is it in the car somewhere, is it in the tool box, is it on a parts shelf, did I leave it out in the alley.....?? I found a small piece I needed in a manilla folder in the file cabinet, under Volvo.

I once bought the same Alfa Romeo book twice, about 10 years apart. Went to put it on the shelf..... and there it was already.... I gave it to a friend.

A related practice to yours is the one where I keep a desirable piece that is in high demand in the garage. "I will get this ready to sell soon, everybody wants this specific version of this cylinder head!" It sits under a dust cover in the garage until all the enthusiasts have moved on from that car, the cars are all old and worn out, no one wants them anymore, and there is now zero demand for that "valuable" part.

You guys are killing me.

Anyone want to buy a fiberglass bumper bar for a 94-99 Deville? I bought it when SWMBO backed into something a few too many times and broke it. It was an aftermarket unit that didn't look nearly as sturdy as OEM, so I stowed it and bought the real thing and installed it. I did list it on CL a few years back. It's practically sold!

I was going to have "my" body guy repaint another side mirror from the men's mall for that car, but I apparently waited so long that he closed his business. No idea where he went, although he told me previously that his wife was a dentist, so he's probably just enjoying not working.

Yesterday I put off replacing the right engine pad for my xc90 3.2. Had all the mounts for weeks but didn't read VIDA until yesterday, so didn't find out I needed new angle-tightened bolts until I was about to begin getting dirty. At least I got the other mounts done.

Today I put off dropping the oil pan on the 06 v70. I did the entire PCV system when I bought it last summer and just recently realized it's consuming 1qt oil every 1000mi. The drain port into the oil pan was clean then and I had good bubbles when I blew into it. Maybe it's the turbo. I put off checking that as well.

I'm still putting off replacing the fuel tank float on the v70. New float's been on the bench about six months. Once the tank is below half full, the gauge starts to read psychedelic values. It's kind of a conversation piece.
