FWIW, I flushed via the IPD kit w/14 qts Valvoline Dex for older trannys. I'll flush again after 15K miles with the same. I suspect my other parts will fail before the tranny. I've noticed a smoother shifting pattern but seemingly a little more slip at startup. Might well be due to the old fluid being REALLY old, say 135000 miles. the fluid was bright and clear red after the flush. Maybe the tranny's no better, but I feel good :-)

I agree with you about the tranny possibly already damaged. Once the fluid is really black and really burnt, even a flush may not restore full functionality. Still, it's worth a try and maybe things will just stay as they are and not get worse. It still bothers me that Volvo says never to flush the tranny.

Especially when it's not that big of a deal.... I think I'm more angry at them for not locating the PCV system somewhere you could clean everything out easily!

I completely agree. Someone mentioned moving the oil trap to a location outside of the intake area, but really that doesn't solve anything because the hoses to the engine can still become clogged up. Seems the only other real solution is to get a second oil trap of sorts and mount it between the current oil trap and the pcv nipple to catch more oil...but that would be for folks (like me...maybe you?) who plan on driving these cars for half-a-million miles.

Volvo wouldnt be able to keep ripping people off if it was easy to get to. Some people have had the big oil separator actually explode on them at Volvospeed.
Its a very repair intensive car when they get older.

Cheers

I'm getting ready to do my Tranny flush on my '02 S60 AWD. Apparently on the '02 S60 AWD I see that the ATF flows out of the hole in the radiator. Nylon tubing can then be stuffed into this hole to accept the old, used ATF.

Stop me if I start spewing out false data...

Could you not then rig up something up to the hose that came out of that hole in the radiator to feed in good fluid.

If so, would it then not be necessary to drain the fluid out the drain plug. You could just keep feeding in good fluid until you see the fluid that is being pumped out become clear?

You could but you would need a way to gently force it in....the way it works is that the pump keeps forcing it. There is no "sucking" action on that side, if that makes sense. Plus, there are two reasons for draining-->Filling-->Flusing:
1. You replace more of the old transmission fluid so less mixes before you even begin the flush and the new fluid pushes out the old fluid. 2. You can inspect the magnetic drain plug for deposits and see the condition of your transmission better. At least this makes sense to me. I'm planning on doing my '04 V70 tomorrow. It's over-due as it has 50K miles on it now with original fluid.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. So by filling the amount you removed through the dipstick hole that is putting the fluid back in basically where the hose would go?

Yep...that would be the way it is. One might think that they could then fill with a special funnel through the top of the radiator, but I'm afraid that draining back into the tranny sump would take too long, plus there's always a chance of fubarring the opening to it, so I'll stick with what's been proven by others.

Just finished a flush today at 50K miles on the '04 V70...though it's slightly different from earlier V70's, S70's and 850's, it's all about the same procedure. Everything worked fine! Color of fluid at the end was almost a bright pink! I know this is good preventative maitenance for the transmission. When I get back from my in-laws (Fayetteville, NC) after Christmas (don't worry, I'll be able to mod the forum from there too...maybe not as often), I have the S70 to flush!
