The trick is to ROTATE the fitting first to break the bond created by the O-ring.

Then hook the tool UNDERNEATH the Red Plastic ring and pull it upward.

To be clear, with the paint can opener, there is a little nuance to releasing the fuel line fitting and they don't give you a lot of play with those fittings. You need to pull out the fitting as far as you can, then slide the curved tip of the paint can opener under the ring inside of the fitting. While gently pulling the paint can opener out with one hand, the other hand gently pushes the fitting back in so the inner ring slide into the outer fitting, Keep pulling on the paint can opener and the fitting should come off.

There isn't much vertical play between the face of the pump and the body panel to pull the fitting clear of the pump nozzle.

It works better the more you do it. Making sure that the fitting is clean may help a lot. Spraying something that would clean the grime off and then evaporate, or maybe just compressed air, might help.

To validate ka0ren, the first time I did it I made several tools and it was a LOT of work to get them off.
