I have an appointment to go see the '01 this Sunday. That seller is a joy to work with, let me tell you. Question though. This is a P2...do I still have to be paranoid about the transmission? I thought that was a P1 issue?
I was going to see the '07 tonight but the seller, when informed I wasn't just going to blindly purchase the vehicle, told me he had another 'serious buyer' coming on Sunday and I should contact him when I'm ready to buy. He reiterated the car was 'perfect' when I again mentioned needing to look at the motor (timing belt) and undercarriage. If you could see my face right now. We did end our exchange amicably though as I do not want to burn that bridge yet.
I'm tempted to tell '07 guy on Monday I'll buy the car sight unseen for $3200-$3300 and see how desperate he is to unload. My plan then would be to replace the TB and WP myself regardless. I love working on cars and am eager to get to know my future Moosicorn. I think I'd actually be happy with that if the car was a T5, not that I'm dead set on a turbo. My (admittedly idiotic) hesitation is with the '01 and how nice the seller is to deal with. Of course we're ultimately talking about me purchasing a car I'm not afraid to put my in-laws and fiance in and send them worry-free off on road trips (possibly without me). I'm the wrencher in the family and my mother-in-law already hates that I'm even looking at a 'new' car. I'd NEVER be forgiven if I bought a lemon.
Thanks for letting me ramble!

If the 07 guy is a flipper and "salesguy", and doesn't know the history, I'd be skeptical. He understands pressure sales.
If the 01 T5 is single owner and/or well maintained (pics look damn good), you'll have more fun driving it.
Is the 07 2.4l with turbo? If not, pass considering the performance and seller.
Either way, enjoy the search.
PS. The T5 will require high test gasoline.

All of that is true of the '07 guy. He did state he didn't know the history of the car.
I believe they're the second owners. The owner stated he has the mechanical history/receipts.
'07 is not a turbo.
Thank you.
I'm used to HT with my BMWs and MX5. No problem but thank you for the info! Knowledge is power!

Check KBB.com for private sales of a 2007 2.4l NA. This one is overpriced. If you don't require the performance of a turbo, you should be able to find single owner NA's with less miles. They aren't as desirable and were the bottom of the product line...still nice but this guy wants too much based on the mileage and lack of maintenance history (ie. TB and water pump).
Good luck with your search. Atlanta is a big market and lots of Volvo's in the 2005-2013 range should be available.

That 2001 T5 will be a blast to drive. Get it warmed up and just make sure the tranmission shifts normally and that's all you need. Less than 10% of them were problematic, they just get press in the Fora and then the posting bias sets in.
The transmissions are made by AISIN and are used in all kinds of cars successfully.

Hey Guys,
I'll try and divert my obsession toward literature for now (as I'm waiting on the '01 owner to tell me when he can reschedule the showing-his doing). It's like, why won't anyone sell me a Volvo for crying out loud?! Is there a vetting process I'm not aware of?
For us BMW ilk, we've got the Bentley manual as our bible. Does the much nicer Moosey community have something similar? How easy is it to get ahold of a paper shop manual (that isn't Haynes or Chilton)? I did build an R6 from a Haynes manual and stray parts diagrams but I like more comprehensive teardowns, you know? I have zero experience with Chilton.
Youtube videos are nice and all but sometimes you need paper to smudge fingerprints on, like little badges of courage.

I’m unaware of any paper service manuals for P2’s, unless printed PDF counts. Most use ViDA 2014D and a DiCE unit to interface with the vehicle. Rick is one of the ViDA gurus here and there is an entire section dedicated to ViDA related concerns HERE.
It’s not a very user friendly system, but it can prove to be quite invaluable in some situations as it can retrieve Volvo-specific codes from various modules/sensors that other scanners cannot.
For the first 9 years of P2 Volvo ownership I was able to get by the old fashioned way using intuition and common sense, coupled with the genius helpers here. I don’t feel ViDA is mandatory, but there are some cases it can help make a lot of sense out of mud.

The Bentley for our BMW E30 is the best manual I've ever seen. Diagnostic steps built in (but it's a fairly simple car). The Bentley for the Audi A4 is over 2" thick and doesn't tell you how to do anything, it's just a technical specs manual for dealer mechanics.
I have this paper Haynes for the P2....it's OK...grainy b&w photos, but decent instructions.
Sorry to distract, but does anyone know what this little door is in that compartment next to the radio? I often stuff my phone and wallet in there and then forget them when I get out.

Thank you! I've purchased that same manual just now off of Ebay. I have the Bentley manuals for my E36 (sold last week), E46 (will be listed as soon as I R and R the starter) and F32 (customer car) and I love them for the most part. I'm a torque-spec fanatic and appreciate the technical details.
Best not get me started.
